I recently got the taco inspected when they failed me for a leaking rack and pinion. just finished replacing everything along with UBJ/LBJ and CV. When I went to see how much fluid the rack could hold I noticed that Toyota says to use Dexron 2/3 trans fluid in the rack. would it hurt anything by using power steering fluid? It is a 99 so maybe they have changed m the recommendation?

power steering fluid "is" tranny fluid, just often with different colored dye in it (or no dye at all) to make you "think" its somehow different and ok to pay twice as much for it in a bottle that says PS fluid.

regular tranny fluid is what was in it when it left the factory. the dealership fluids do often have a different color dye so they know if its dealer fluids in it so if you buy PS fluid from the dealer, it wont "look" like tranny fluid

I've been using the toyota trans fluid and still have issues all the time. First my rack was leaking so I replaced it with a reman, then pump was on it's way out so I replaced that, and now rack is leaking again. Can't win.

don't use regular power steering fluid in your system. if the toyota engineers that designed the truck thought it would have been ok to use the regular fluid, they would have listed regular fluid as a replacement fluid. you can look up the safety data sheets on just about any chemical and find it's makeup/formulation.

chemical makeup of power steering fluid
Petroleum distillates, hydrotreated heavy paraffinic 64742-54-7 90-100%

chemical makeup of some dexron 3s
Lubricating oils (petroleum), hydrotreated spent Lubricating oils (petroleum), 60-100% 64742-58-1
    HYDROTREATED LIGHT PARAFFINIC DISTILLATE 11.82 % 64742-55-8
MINERAL OIL Not a hazardous substance or mixture. 5.00 %
    METHACRYLATE COPOLYMER 1.66 %
    ALKOXYLATED LONG-CHAIN ALKYL AMINE

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Only use ATF. I know from past experience that mixing the two really messes shit up.
