I still own mine but since then bought a safe and now use the cabinet to store ammo. It's handy to have.

Over the last few days I've aquired a M&P 15-22 Sport, 2k rds, case, and a couple still targets. This thing is freaking fun to shoot, I've already blown threw 325rds. Only complaint is that it didn't include a bag and just came with one magazine.

I've been looking at those.... Are they really that easy to break into ? Would I be better off trying to find a used safe ?

Two minutes with a crowbar is really all it'd take with most of those cabinets. They're just sheet metal, after all. Enough to keep the kids out, but that's about it. :notsure:

If you were determined, you could do it with a crow bar. Of course, they would have to take the extra time to do this and in my neighborhood that would likely deter a thief as we and our neighbors look out for one another. Not nosy, but we know what is and is not normal. I got it mainly because I wanted something a little more secure than a locked drawer. From time to time we have kids come to the house, so I wanted to make sure everything was secured. It also was in the budget where a nicer/heavier safe is just not at this time. You get what you pay for and I understand what I paid for. YMMV.

Looking at Home Depot online I was able to find a few less then $300 that'll hold 8-10 . I think I'll end up going with one of those .

I have that same model with a dial combination. It's not a bad little safe, but fitting 8-10 guns in there is pretty optimistic. You can make them fit, but if you want to get one out of the back you've got to take everything else that's in front of it out too, unless you don't mind them knocking against each other.

BUT, for a first safe they're not bad. I still have mine, it's 10 years old and still works perfectly. I just built a shelving system for it and use it for ammo now.

    Yup that's it.

That's good to know! if I can't find a bigger used one , but that's most likely the model I'll buy. I don't think I'll ever own more than 10 rifles but who knows

If you're storing bolt-action rifles, knock the capacity down to about six, lol. It'd hold 10 lever, pump, or semi-auto just fine. But the bolt guns intrude on the space for the gun next to them. My Remington 700 needed to be on the last spot on the left to keep it from interfering/elbowing the others in the ribs.

Yeah that's really nice but a little out of my price range honestly the max I want to spend would be $300

I'm assuming you've already looked through craigslist? Sometimes they pop up on there for pretty cheap.

Also, Home Depot honors the Lowes 10% off coupons, so if you can get your hands on one of those it'd be an easy way to save some $$

I know it's more than you want to spend, but the advantage of those bigger safes are you can store more stuff in them. I have my rifles, pistols, ammo (4 50cal cans full+) as well as important docs all stored in my 24 gun safe.

You will find use for the extra space even if you don't see yourself owning any more firearms (c'mon now.)

Harbor Freight Bunker Hill is around that price sometimes cheaper with 20% off.

Edit: Always buy larger then you need, you will use it up fast.

Before you buy a safe with the dial make sure you test open a store model with the combination. I wanted to go with a dial for reliability purposes.... Opening it is down right tedious 3 turns right 4 turns left 2 right and then half a turn left. Even in the best days it's rare I get it open first shot I probably am off by a tic mark or two. If you needed to get anything out of it quickly you would certainly be unable to open it with block hands or any element of hurry. There will be no saving the guns or important items in the safe if the house is on fire.
