Complete Brake Failure

No. In general.

 

These trucks jump like motherfuckers especially at low speed prior to breaking it in. So much so I was hesitant to let me wife drive this thing as I envisioned her wreaking havoc in the parking lot. I am almost positive that is what happened to you. After break in mine has been much smoother. I have also experienced that while slowly getting it into the garage.

 

I am familiar with the jump. Happens almost every time I pull into the garage. This was the brake peddle going all the way to the floor and failing to stop the truck.

 

I'm curious about this too. I just bought a new 3rd gen after someone hit me and totalled my new second gen at only 500 miles. If its got brake problems, I want to know what to do about them

 

OP, I don't think you are overreacting, I think the dealer/Toyota is underreacting. I understand the concept of "replicating the problem" but I feel there are some problems that should be taken very seriously weather it can be replicated or not. TBH, I would ask the dealer/Toyota to buy back the truck

 

I am the first that I know of with this problem. Even after this I would still take a 2016 over a 2015. That is why I didn't try to make a trade last night. I believe this is a localized problem to my truck. I wouldn't worry if I was in your place.

 

That's good best to be as ignorant as possible when trying formulate an opinion. My motorcycle does the same thing, very different system but still ABS.

If Toyota allowed this, can you imagine all the returns from buyer regrets?

 

So, the conclusion appears to be:
The 2016 Tacoma, like the Gen2 Tacoma, and some other ABS equipped vehicles, will have an ABS non-response situation in very low speed, near zero traction situations due to slow re-acceleration of wheel movement after a lockup. This results in a delayed signal from the wheel speed sensor to the ABS unit as the non-rotation is perceived as a locked wheel and brake force is restricted. Owners should be aware of this characteristic and if encountered should begin pumping the brake to regain braking action.

I appreciate the OP bringing this characteristic to my attention and will use extra caution in these conditions/situations.

 

Interesting because I just got off the phone with the dealer and they still don't have a definitive conclusion on why this happened. If they are not willing to jump to a conclusion why would you be? Could your explanation be accurate, yes. Until Toyota agrees and releases the truck I will wait for their opinion.

 

Was your driveway and garage wet or icy? I was under the impression from the other threads conditions were icy, snowy or wet.

 

Toyota will not have a conclusion or admission to this for the same reason they wouldn't have one for the Gen2 issues mentioned in that thread.
I am sure I am coming off as a jerk but it isn't my intention. Its easy for me to come to a conclusion because this is symptomatic of previous experiences I have had and of some ABS systems in general regardless of what the manufacturer will admit or suggest.

Also, unlike some people posting here, not you OP, I am not prone to hysteria or hyperbole. It makes some people feel good to be able to blame others for anything.

People should just be aware of what you and other Tacoma owners have experienced and be cautious under certain circumstances. Same reason I wouldn't be riding my motorcycle fast on a bumpy road and expect that my ABS will work 100% if I just yank on the brake lever. It won't.

Snow, ice, wet conditions seems to be the common denominator in the reported brake/abs failures.

I'd probably still push for a different truck.

I have had a brake peddle go all the way to the floor, scared the sh*t out of me and I will never forget that feeling. I have the ABS come on weekly in the winter, same with traction control going around turns... completely different feeling. Are "we" saying that it is possible for ABS to misinterpret conditions and cause the brake system to lose all pressure? I know all about ABS causing a truck not to stop, the peddle stays firm and vibrates and a tone goes off in the truck. I would be amazed if a working ABS can cause a complete loss of pressure and the peddle to hit the floor in any situation. Should I prepare to be amazed?
