Complete Brake Failure

I was reading about it somewhere, but I can't remember where it was

 

When you get your truck back try to find a snowy icy parking lot to try to recreate the problem. If it is a similar problem to what my truck does then you should be able to get to happen. Most of the time the ABS will pulsate like its supposed to but maybe 1 out of 20 attempts I can get it to do the no brakes/coasting problem. I believe it happens when all or close to all of the wheels lock up/slide so the ABS kills braking power to all wheels. I now expect it possibly happen anytime I'm stopping in the snow and give myself extra stopping distance. I also don't let anyone else drive the truck in the snow. Better tires also help. I have Toyo Open Country AT tires now and the ABS activates much less than with the stock tires.

 

Well it just finished snowing so I think I'm going to take a ride to the new subdivision. Just a straight paved road and see if I can't replicate the problem. What did the dealer say to you?

 

Drove up an down the road. Couldn't get it to duplicate. More stopping in that 15 min than I'd care to repeat. Now I did discover something. Under 5 mph the wheels lock up and the ABS doesn't activate. At 6 mph it does. Under that 5 mph mark the peddle felt strong and no pulsing. Above 6 mph I had the standard ABS peddle pulse. Now I am honestly more confused. If ABS doesn't activate till after 6 mph how could the loss of peddle be due to ABS when I was going less than 1 mph...???

 

It was never due to your ABS

 

What kind of driving and temperatures prior to it happening the first time?

 

Very similar to tonight. Upper 20's low 30's. Snow tonight was slightly slipperier than when it happened.

 

After testing it tonight and seeing how the ABS reacts at a slow speed I agree. I still don't know what caused the problem but I cannot replicate it. Will try again in the morning with a colder temp. Hopefully the snow sticks around until then.

 

Any higher speed driving prior to the first occurrence?

 

Any aftermarket stuff done to your truck recently? Just curious. Seen guys blow a hole through a brake booster many times and try to patch it up with butyl rubber. Just wondering if maybe there is a leak or something. But OR's have the hydraulic booster right?

 

Drove home from work on wet roads with some snow cover in areas. Max speed of 55mph. Truck sat for 45 min to an hour on the road as I cleared the driveway and sidewalks of snow. Turned truck around, pulled in driveway and they failed while feathering the peddle as I was positioning my truck in the garage.

 

Truck is stock minus Softopper and roof rack. Yes the OR has the new hydraulic booster.

Ok this answers your complaint... The 2016 has hydraulically boosted brakes like most diesel trucks do. You pumping the brakes to "inch into position" most likely exhausted the accumulator of pressure resulting in a dead pedal. Instead of pumping the brakes try a more steady pressure on the pedal till you get to your parking position. I own 2 3500 Dodges both are different year models and have different ABS systems. Both trucks have "hydro boost" braking systems similar to the system used on the new Tacoma. You can make both of the have a dead pedal feel if you repeatedly pump the brakes at idle and exhaust the accumulator pressure.

 

This is also correct tires lock from being wet on slick concrete ABS kicks in release front brakes. Truck slides then rolls.

 

You repro'd the issue ?

I'm not going to scour the whole thread, but have you considered disabling the ABS system in your truck until you get a solution? Probably as easy as pulling a relay in the fuse panel and I bet that would eliminate whichever electronic component caused the problem.
