What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Yes, sorry, I was referring to the fact that I shall be installing my CB soon and have been contemplating the addition of a capacitor to the install. I only mentioned it because you are having a radio static problem and both your muzac ready-o and my CB rady-o run on elektrik!

How hard was it to install?

 

I welded that up back in 2012. I need a version 2, it was my first attempt and I kind of messed up on the mounting so it isn't all that strong.

 

Well... At that time nothing, I might have taken one of their class projects out on my own.

I teach manufacturing and Machining. Still getting used to the whole teaching thing it's fun and rewarding but man I wish I could fire people like I used to.

Not bad honestly. Drilled the first hole and set it up to make sure we knew how. After that blazed through the other 9 holes and then threw the rivets in. Easier than I thought it would be. And the damn thing is stout! Not a real loud wind noise at 70 mph either. A tad noticeable but not ridiculous

Generally, static noise can be traced to poor grounding. Since it is most noticeable when you turn on the headlights, check your grounds for those.

IIRC, there are at least 2 per side with a retrofit. Clean up the contact area, make sure you aren't grounding to a painted surface. Stuff like that. Did you tap into any of the stock headlight wiring for halos? If so, make sure those wires where you tapped in aren't loose or poorly grounded. What have you done with the open headlight plug on the passenger side? Does your high beam indicator work?

 

So should everything be wired to the battery ground? Cause I got things going to grounds on the walls of the engine bay. Maybe that is the problem. The halos aren't even hooked up at the moment, but they get power only when the key is on, so they arnt taped into the headlight, but some wire that is hot when the key is on. Not sure what wire exactly, my dad did that part.

And my high beam indicator does not work. So nothing is plugged into the passenger side headlight plug.

Can I tie all the ground wired to one wire and have it go to the battery?

 

What is a good front bumper that won't require a lift?

 

No, I don't think that is the answer. I would start by redoing the grounds for the reftrofit only since that is when the static/noise is triggered.

Do a search for big 3 wiring upgrade. Look at the reasoning for doing it.

Yeah I was planning on doing the big 3 this summer.

So do I just need to make sure all the ground have a good ground? Don't try to get them all to the battery ground?

 

Traded my super beat 96 for $1600 worth of new Snap On stuff. Looking forward to getting the new impact the most (1,190 lbs of breakaway torque). Been using a 20 year old, and very tired 1/2 IR impact for years so this should be one hell of an improvement. Pretty disappointing how little you get for $1600 with snap on though. Oh well, truck wasn't selling for $1200 so may as well trade it. Kinda wanted to build a truggy but this thing was hell to work on. Nothing came off without a torch except the axle nut, which needed a 3/4 impact. I have enough trouble working on the black one, not gonna go through that crap again. I need a west coast Toyota.....
