tired of my tacoma, about to list for sale, anyone else been this aggrivated?

ok, so i know the prevous owner didnt take care of the truck like he should, and most of the things im having to repair and ticking me off has been issues engineered by toyota themselves. dash rattle, the toyota tick, drive line vibration, placement of belt adjustments ect ect..
i usually enjoy making upgrades, and replacing the parts myself because i know what, has and when something was done but working on this truck has pissed me off more times then i can remember. Currently im in the process or doing the deck plate mod, changing the front brake pads and replacing the steering rack bushings. its sunday evening and i havent gotten anything done except the deck plate installed. the brakes bolts will not loosen, even with a pullbar and rubber mallet. also how they change out irritates me, with my 20 yr old crx its just one bolt, swing the caliper up swap pads and put back togeather. now onto the steering rack, theres 3 different sizes and the brainchild of toyota placed one bolt comming from the top of the cross member instead of under, where the others are and gives you easly accesss.
i could go on and on about little quirks ive seen over the past few months owning the truck, but i think im going to go see if the pb blaster will help make things cooperate with what im trying to do. anyone else get this fed up with trying to work on this? not to mention the fuel milage these things get, really dissipointing. Rant over.

Drive a ford ranger for a year, then the Tacoma will fill like a engineering masterpiece.

 

Has it occurred to you that it is a truck that is almost 11 years old? I know that some designs are not the greatest but its nothing that serious. A truck that old is going to have some kind of issues. Rattles, vibrations, wear and tear are what goes along with age. I say be happy that its only minor issues and not big things.

 

haha yea, very true, the only american ill fool with is my superduty diesel. what i have worked on has been tight but not too bad. but its just used to haul the race trailer so it dosent get too much wear.

not really, i figured it would be an upgrade from the 20yr old honda ive been driving for the past 10 yrs daily and actually its tighter then the tacoma, no bushings worn easy to work on and still a solid car that gets 36-38mpg. its got its quirks but its still easy as can be to work on . i guess i had higher expectations for the tacoma since it is a toyota. i didnt know it would be a P.I.T.A. to check my trans fluid cause the dip stick dosent want to go back in. i didnt know the dash and air bag would rattle, even in brand new ones. that theres no deffinate fix to the drive shaft vibration, that the valves rattle, and valve cover gasket leaks were common.
some of these issues are because the guy didnt take as good of care of it as he said, but when you read the same issue over and over again it seems like its more common then just this truck. I like the truck, its looks great but i guess i had too high of expectations and afraid that these little issues and quirks will turn into major problems not too far down the road.

 

Wow. Interesting. The only one of those issues I have with my 98 is the rattling dash board thing. Mine only does that first thing in the morning when it's real cold for some reason. It doesn't rattle at all after I've driven it a few miles and it gets good and warmed up. It only has 97k miles on it so maybe I'll run into some of these things later on. For now though, everything works just fine, it doesn't use a drop of oil. No fluid leaks whatsoever. The motor purrs like a kitten. I couldn't be happier. My 87 Toyota pickup had 480k miles on it when I sold it and it didn't have any of those issues either. In fact, that truck didn't even have a dashboard rattle. It did use about a quart of oil every 1500 miles but Lordy mercy, it had 480k miles on it. I figured that was pretty good. I sold it and bought an Isuzu Trooper. Nice vehicle but not nearly as sound as my old Toyota truck. I've wished many times I still had that thing. I might be on a Toyota commercial by now.

 

Yeah I guess so. Sorry I did not mean to seem like an a$$. Its just I have a 2000 with 92k and have small things like the dash rattles, and it knocks on a cold morning but thats about it.

 

trade in all your crappy vehicles and buy a newer tacoma or brand new tacoma. And you'll be set

 

its not a problem, just was getting pissed trying to deal with these little issues. where in alabama are you from?

set with what the same issues? so far the tacome has been the biggest pos. i am an analysis at a paper mill, so im not going to drive a new car there, it can do some damage, one reason i was wanting a small cheaper truck. a new tacoma couldnt haul the race trailer and i do love my f250, but its only job is to haul the trailer or if i need it. i would still be driving the honda if i hadnt hit a deer with it. sofar the tacoma is the only one thats been a issue for the last 10 yrs and ive only had it a few months. im not having mechanical issues to say, but things thats designed the way they are is what is pissing me off.

 

Youre right. Sell it. Get rid of the POS. I love my tacoma and i can deal with all that stuff. If it annoys you so much then why bother? BTW of course a CRX is going to get like a million miles to the gallon compared to a Tacoma. CRX=Lightweight. Tacoma=TRUCK! Hmm let me think... Its not like a million other people out there love their tacomas and never want to sell them because of how bada$$ they are. But if things like that bother you then get rid of it.

An 11 yr. old truck will have some rough edges, no matter what logo is on the tailgate. The components you are changing have been on there for a long time and will not just pop right off with out a fight. Sounds like a bad day under the hood, coupled with irritants about the truck adding up over time.
But, If you not happy with it, pull the trigger and move on.

Sorry but it's 11 years old.. it's gonna have some issues. Also gas mileage come on people I'm sick and tired of this it's a TRUCK!! It's not designed to get good gas mileage be it small or huge like your Superduty..

 

the dash rattle thing is basically a 98-00 problem... the 95.5-97's have different dash design and it seems to hold up little better. same goes for 01 up. the other problems just sound like you dont turn wrenches often, I mean there are alot of worse things out there to be working on. change the head gaskets on your superduty once, call me when you need help lifting the CAB OFF since its the only way.

 

Fail.

I have a few things for you.

1.) Unless the 99 is different than the 2000, why are you unbolting the calipers to change the pads?

2.) the dash rattle can be taken care of. A foam ear plug stuck between the window and the vent will cease the rattle.

3.) The steering rack is designed that way for a reason. It has not come off on you yet has it?

4.) For every ONE thing you find wrong with this truck you will find 10 more with others.


I have a 2001 with over 160k miles. And they were not easy highway miles.
Just chill out and ask some questions. With all of the people here, we have pretty much done it all.

You shouldn't have to remove your calipers to change the brake pads. Just a couple of springs and pins. Almost all Tacomas have a dash rattle and the valve ticks. It seems like you're overreacting a little. Would you rather be replacing transmissions every 40k miles? Maybe new ball joints and wheel bearings every year? Did you research Tacomas before you bought one? 95% of your issues are common and annoying at best (hardly problems) and the other 5% is just the way repairing any vehicle is.....a pain in the ass. What aggrivates me about my Tacoma is that I had to sell it to someone that probably doesn't and never will appreciate it as much as I did. Things could be a whole lot worse.
