I've been getting a random squeal that sounds like its from my back right tire. It started on my road trip to Florida from Oklahoma, thinking maybe it was all the stuff in the bed rubbing together. Anyways it did it for 1-2 more days after I unloaded everything. A few days later it rained and did not do it again for awhile. Now it's starting to do it randomly again. Does it when you're on the gas and starts around 20-30mph. If I let off the gas after a few seconds it stops. Just a real high pitched squeal. Sometimes it'll squeal gradually really fast and work itself out and quit for the next few miles, then start back up.

Any ideas? I won't be able to get a sound recording as I'm flying out tomorrow.

    Any help is appreciated!

    Maybe the driveshaft center bearing.

It's a sealed bearing I believe. I replaced mine and the noise went away.

could be the driveshaft support bearing, or could be rear wheel bearing. Does your drum backing plate look oily? Do you smell gear oil around that wheel? My Passenger side wheel bearing is slowing going out and allowing gear oil to seep out past the seal into the drum. Just gotta find downtime to get it replaced...

I don't smell gear oil but I'll have to double check the backing plate. If it were the wheel bearing I'd expect it to be constant and not only when I'm on the gas though?

Mine was most noticeable in reverse. Squeak squeak squeak, then I would push in the clutch and it would stop. So I got underneath and pushed up on the driveshaft and way too much play in the center bearing. I replaced the 2 ujoints while I had the shaft out.

I don't hear it at all in reverse or sub ~20 speeds. Will i be able to tell if i push on the driveshaft and it's loose?

Carrier :-D. well, most likely. Try lubing your u-joints and seeing what happens. or put a go-pro under there and see what happens

    Dat wobble......

Thanks for the recommendations guys, I'm out of town but will check it as soon as I'm back. Is there a zerk on the center bearing?

no. it's just a bearing in a big rubber doughnut housing.

IF you want, and the housing is bad, the housing around the bearing of our center support can be peeled back slightly. Just enough to inject a shitload of silicone into. Once the silicon dries, it will act as an extra "cushion", for the CB. It may cost about 20 bucks to get enough silicone in there, but there's a good chance it will prevent you from spending potentially 200 bucks getting a new part and having it replaced by someone. Just get it injected inside the rubber housing and don't let any spew out.

Is that just putting a band-aid on a bigger problem though?

It's easy to replace and there's a very informative post about it on the 1st gen main page.

guess I should have continued explaining. after i started hearing a noise coming from my rear end I greased my u-joints and the noise got a lot quieter. didn't go away, just got quieter. it made me think that lubing allowed the drive shaft to flex much easier at the carrier, allowing less movement, rubbing, and vibration in the carrier's "cage". less rubbing and less noise to me pointed right at the CB. so i changed the CB a week later and voila. no more noises. ever. at all. but that was partly cause I also sprayed rubberized undercoating all over my chassis to try and isolate the noise. spraying your leafs apparently can make them much quieter.

wouldn't that do it anytime it's just rolling? it only does it when I've got my foot on the gas, never does it coasting.
