Anyone experience any locker issues? Just trying to see if they are actually reliable or just another thing that can break and have to limp home

Well, one way to find out...take it out & use it... They're a solid unit, but not unbreakable (like everything else)

I read a 3rd gen post about a guy with brand new rig doing some mild off-roading and he had a bad selenoid. Wondering if that is a common occurrence.
If I bought a locker for my current truck it would be a Detroit or ARB but if I upgrade to 3rd gen and it comes with a locker I want to know its not going to grenade on me. Like you said everything is breakable though

Man these things never work for me. At least on the 1st gens. I've had two 1st gens. With the '98, it worked for about 10 times then gave up on me. Never even worked once with my current '01.

This is exactly what I don't want. I had a friend grenade his e-locker as well in his first gen but thought it could have been a fluke incident. I wonder if they can break if they aren't engaged? I wouldn't think so. That way I guess if your worried about you don't have to use it aha.
Did your 98 locker break or just fail to engage? Do you know who makes the locker for Toyota by any chance?

My bad, let me clarify. Mine just have failed and fail to engage. I'd also like to be clear that I wasn't hard on the '98 either. And I have no idea who makes the locker for Toyota, I thought it was just Toyota :notsure:

The more I use my factory locker, the better it engages and disengage. That's theconly problem I've ever had with any, 3 Off Roads owned. My 2015 gets excellent traction off road, with factory reliability.

I guess failure to engage isn't as big as an issue as one blowing up. I heard they lock closed vs an ARB that if it breaks breaks open? Whatever that means. I would assume it meant you couldn't move anymore if E Locker breaks and you could still roll with ARB broken but I'm probably wrong and would like someone who knows to clarify!

Lockers on up to 2016 trucks were solid devices. You had to us them often so they work when you need them, that means exercising them on monthly bases. Toyota e-locker design was pretty good. That was the only factory system that can be engaged manually when computer fails.
On 2016 trucks loos like Toyota replaced their design with cheap ass system used by other manufacturers. So experiences wil vary.

This makes sense because it seems to be one of those parta that you would want to break in equally just like the other parts on the truck. Kind of like putting your truck in 4wd and keeping everything moving. It will be interesting to see how things play out with the new design.

That "new" design does not appear to be new. It seems is the same crap others used and replaced with aftermarket ones.

I still can't figure out why they would take an "offroad" truck and make everything electrical. Push button 4wd, push button locker. I really wish my truck had a manual engage shifter 4wd system. Every time I flip the switch over to 4wd I think man I wonder how long this will last for.
