Now I can't get the wife's tundra to stay running. It'll barely start then die if I take my foot off the gas. Would a bad alternator in the Tacoma kill both batteries like that? Is there a fuse for the alternator?

No, when was the last time you got gas in both?

No. Only when the alt is charging it should read 13.7-14.2. 12.6-12.7 resting is typically a good wet cell battery. 12.8-13.0 resting is a good AGM.

OP do you have a battery charger? Odds are you ran down the tundra battery trying to start the Tacoma and it's just too low to keep the truck running and needs a charge.

Then take the Tacoma battery in and try to get it warrantied. They will hook it up to a load test matching and you could get a new battery out of it with your remaining 3 years of warranty left for the new one. If it comes back as "good" then you will want to start checking other things

Hey ok! First off thanks for all the replies. I really appreciate it! So cool.

Secondly things are looking up. Got a new battery from Walmart and put it in the tundra. Still wanted to die but after holding the gas for a couple minutes it idled on its own and seems to be fine now. Which is a huge relief because I can't be leaving the wife and kids out in the cold with truck problems. But I think we are good.

    Now back to the Tacoma

Alternator fuse? Ignition something? Any thoughts would be great. I'm now charging the original Tacoma battery, the interstate, and going from there.

What year Tundra? Its normal for the 2nd gen Tundras to stall after the first start when changing batteries. The ECU is just getting its ducks in a row. The second start will let the truck run normal.

As for the Tacoma, battery post clamps and body grounds are known weak links. Clean the post clamps good and check body grounds.

2001 tundra. It stalled after the battery switching for sure. I think it's good now.

Tacoma- battery posts are good I think. Here's a dumb question where are all the body grounds besides the one right by the battery?

Another thing is- for years now I've always had to press the clutch start cancel button to start it. Just never got around to buying the $100 dollar part to fix and it seems like most of my buddies with tacoma a have the same situation so I've always just rolled with it.

However now when I put the ignition to on when I usually engage the clutch start cancel (csc) button and then turn the key to start, nothing happens. The csc doesn't light up. Head lights and dome lights come on but no radio. Possible clue there?

Tacomas stall after first start when battery is disconnected as well. At least mine does.

Ok, thanks. So there's 10 of them. Gonna take me a bit to find them. Are the left and right kick panel ones on the inside of the cab?

I have a '99 2.7L, and the starter fuse is inside (behind left side of dash).
The starter relay is in the fuse box under the hood.

    Captain Obvious says:

I think it's time to replace the $100 parts associated with the start circuit that you haven't yet, including the CSC switch.

Your battery might be fine,,just in need of a charge.

Wintertime does tend to "green up" the outside grounds by the time we roll up on springtime. Run those out and make sure they are clean and tight.

Damn. I still can't figure it out

I checked all the grounds I could find. They looked fine. Some of the grounds on the location sheet I couldn't figure out: "near the VSC R/B" I don't know what that means.

i checked the starter wired they are fine.

I ordered a new clutch start cancel button and entire switch assembly. I am skeptical if it is that though because when I would start the truck I would turn the ignition to on and The radio would come on, then have to engage the clutch start cancel button and turn the key to the start position. Now when I put the key in the on position the radio won't come on. So it seems like something other than the clutch start cancel assembly. But maybe not.

I checked all the fuses they seem fine. How do you tell if a 30 amp fuse is blown?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'd think somebody else has been down this road before...?

    Thanks

I wonder if the key switch is shot?
