I've never owned a vehicle with a manual transmission and I will keep it that way.

What was your first brand new car? I am curious because I have met a lot of people like you, but they are all fairly young. My first three new cars weren't even offered with autos, and I imagine in 20 years manuals will be non-existant.

Best I've gotten was 22.5 at a steady 55-60mph, but at 70 I average about 20-20.5 as long as its not too hilly or I'm not driving into a strong headwind. My mon-fri commute/routine of mixed driving I average 17.5-18.

I did something similar on my first drive, but I've gotten use to it now. It did seem a little easy to accidentally put it in reverse. I just chalked it up to my inexperience driving 6spd manuals though. Once I got use to it I really haven't had an issue, and also it beeps when you go in reverse which makes it easier to know you're messing things up lol >.<

Mine makes a beeping sound when you put it in reverse. It only beeps for about a second and it's only inside the truck.
But with the air and stereo going it's pretty easy to miss.

I think you are right about manual's going away, at least in the American vehicle market. My first car was a 1972 Toyota Corolla with a four-speed manual. Drove the hell out of that thing through high school. In '79 got my first truck, a Datsun 620, again with a four-speed. That truck was rugged, cheap to work on, and got good MPGs. Few years after driving the Datsun, I got married and needed a four-door, so I bought a Honda Accord with a five-speed manual. Taught my wife how to drive---painfully, LOL.

Well this old argument never goes away. But these new fanged hydrologic clutches are for sissies, and what's up with syncs. Grow a pair and learn to double clutch.

I'm ready to join the club. I have a deposit down on an OR M/T. It will be my first M/T vehicle ever (only driven manual a couple times before for short periods). Picking it up in another state and driving back, so I have a few hundred miles to learn and get the hang of it . After driving a car with a manual transmission those couple short times in the past, I got that nagging feeling in the back of my mind that I wanted my next car/truck to be one. It also helped make 4x4 more affordable for me in the Tacoma. Win/Win in my opinion.

It feels like a V8 where as the auto feels like a 4 banger. I've swapped with my buddy's 16 off-road v6 auto several times, we both can't believe the difference in power and speed to 60.

I mean in comparison to the 5 speed. When I test drove the 16' taco with the 6 spd manual it just seemed like I had to shift more.

Yeah idk, the v6 manual has been paired with a 6 speed since 05 I believe. I skip from 4th to 6th most all the time. Still hit 5th quickly when I do it just for even wear with a new set of gears.

OMG I just looked at my original post where I said "I've never owned a manual transmission and I intend to keep it that way." I meant to say I've never owned an automatic transmission. It's too late to edit the original post, I should proof read more carefully. I'm horrified at my brain fade. I really wanted a 6 speed since more is better, it's the american way.

I've been around awhile. The only new car I've owned was a Honda Civic in 1976 or so. I got my Tacoma used from a Toyota dealer with a Toyota warranty. I would never buy the 3rd party "warranties" which are really insurance policies.

I feel automatic transmissions are a nightmare just waiting to bite me, the current Toyota versions that come low on fluid and the dealer doesn't want to check until it melts down reinforce my feelings. I also like to feel engaged when I'm driving.

Most 6 speeds are double overdrive purely for fuel economy. It's a nice way of getting a high top gear without suffering lousy spacing lower in the pattern.
