I've been thinking that it would be nice to have a recessed panel in the exterior bedside for a jerry can. Maybe one on each side like older step-side trucks used to have.

The problem is finding tanks skinny enough to work and still be useful; they may be out there but I couldn't find them when I was looking. You can have tanks custom made but it's pretty expensive and you'd need several of them together (due to tank design and space limitations) to have any real usable capacity.

Always thought of this, but I never saw it as opening outward, I looked at it as a giant bed storage door like the inner ones we already have. Sub'd for ideas!!

I would really like to do this. My truck isn't paid off but I am keeping this thing until it will no longer drive. It just seems that there has to be a way to utilize the unused space in the outer sidewall and still make it look factory.

This is where I have my compressor mounted. Making the bedsides hinge up would be fairly easy since the bedsides just bolt on, but you would need to add a ton of bracing to the thin sheet metal bedsdes. The real problem is that there really isnt that much room under there. You have less than 6 inches of depth in the middle where i mounted my comp, and it tapers down to about 3 inches as you go up. You could probably flushmount a rotopax, but a nato sized can would still out a few inches. Same problem with air tanks, most off the shelf tanks are too big, and the ones that aren't are too expensive to justify for their small volume. $150 for 1 gallon tank. That said, one idea I've had for a while now is a couple of obw tanks above the back cubbies. Rough estimation says between 3-4 gallons each side.

I've got 7 scepter jerry cans but 0 rotopax. The rotopax would probably be a better option just due to their size/thickness and weight. I can visualize this in my head. A recessed panel for Fuel on the drivers side and a recessed panel on the passenger side with H2O.

THIS Tacoma has nice use of the bed sides by enlarging the cubbys. Always wanted to try to make a Scepter Jerry fit in the rear driver cubby. As some one said before it would encroach into the bed space if you left the outer sheet metal bedside intact.

I saw a jeep at tds last year that had rotopax recessed into it's rear windows. Search google for recessed rotopax, a couple will pop up

The reason that I'm still thinking about this is because I don't want to take up useable space in the bed but I want to carry spare fuel and water when camping. It seems like you could cut into the exterior bedside between the fuel door and tail light assembly and if you utilize some of the space from the interior storage cubby this should give you enough room for a lockable insert that will fit a Scepter (sticking out just a little), or a Rotopax (flush). As I've said I'm all in for this and I can see it in my head. Problem is I'm not a metal fabricator. I'm a woodworker.
