Changing diff seals and no seal present!

So I got a buddy with a 1st gen 4wd. He swapped out both front diff seals yesterday and had great success of the driver side.

I wasn't there but he said that the passenger side DID NOT have seal in it to begin with! Well, he cleaned cleaned it up real good and seated the new seal into it. He did not know how far to tap the new one in since there wasn't one to go by. He noticed today that the new seal is leaking and is needing help.

Is there any guys with 1st gens that know how far to set the new seal?

I know on my 2nd gen I just tapped untill flush with the housing.

Tap it in about 1/8" in. Then use the cv axle itself to push it in the rest of the way gently. Should be good to go from there.

Not sure how it didn't have a seal to begin with. It wouldn't hold oil if it didn't..

 

He Sid he had a really hard time hetting the old cv out because it was so dry. And he was sure and said he even searched the ground just in case it somehow just fell out. So who knows ! We gone redo it tomorrow. Thanks for the replys

 

Did this a few hours ago and worked like a charm. All we did was take the tire off. Remove the 4 lower spindle bolts and pulled the axle out that way. Worked great. No leaks after a 10 mile ride.
