In my area it's almost unheard of to pay more than sticker MSRP. I always wondered why this true car crap was a big thing because only a speciality car would you ever even maybe hear about it but usually that doesn't happen either as most were special ordered and sold before they came in. When I heard people were paying 10-20k over sticker for a Hellcat I was wondering where this was.

Bottom line they are selling above MSRP because YOU people are letting them. Everyone is quick to run out and buy the latest and greatest and they are taking full advantage of that. If their sales would slow off you can bet your ass they won't be asking or selling above sticker. But when supply is low and demand is high they are taking full advantage of it. My advice, shop around and find a dealer that will sell at or below MSRP. I wouldn't ever pay more than the full retail price. These trucks are still in a short supply for certain models and packages, but they aren't that impossible to find. Shop smart and don't screw over the rest of the buyers, some of which might already be spending an arm and leg to get a new truck in the first place. And if you are buying foolishly above MSRP you better make sure that dealer bends over backwards for you not only at the time of purchase but also for future service and general customer service anytime you return there in the future.

I am in San Diego. $500 below MSRP (or a little better) for Sport/Off Road models is Costco pricing for 2WD versions (or at least it was early last month). No problem getting money off on a 2WD. However, it seems dealers are not sticking to Costco pricing for 4WD versions and are selling at MSRP at best because of how low inventory is on them. I searched far and wide for what I wanted.

If you are after a 4WD version, you will have to leave LA and possibly even California. I searched all over for what I wanted and ended up going with a dealership in Arizona. I'm glad they start off at roughly 1000 off MSRP (but the doc fees in other states are higher $3-400), because with the model I was after (TRD Off Road 4x4 M/T in a specific color), I knew I didn't have much bargaining power. Took me a long time to find it and I searched all of the western states to find the exact model I wanted. They just happened to be getting the exact truck that I was after, even down to the color.

Remember, you are the one with the 30k+. If a dealer in LA won't take a fair price, there are PLENTY of other dealers out there that are willing to take your money at a fair price to you and still make a profit.

Try Brittaney, in the internet dept at Auto Nation in Tempe, AZ. They offered to order me a TRD Sport DC SB 4x4 at invoice. However, Toyota has some BS policy that prohibits them from selling to Hawaiian residents, this does not apply to any other states in the lower 48. I was totally bummed because I'm coming over there on vacation and it would of been perfect to pick up there, then drive around for a couple of weeks.

Great post. I personally would not have a 2016 Tacoma if I did not get the deal I wanted. No way in hell would I pay MSRP for this or any vehicle. I need that $2500 "cushion' to use at sale time. I won't keep this vehicle long enough to pay MSRP.

TIME is on the buyer's side. Patient always pays off whether investing or buying a Tacoma.
I was looking to buy the redesigned Mazda Miata and went to the dealer a couple weeks ago, IT's been out since April 2015 and MSRP was the best they would do. I could not see $10K difference between my 2012 and the new one so I passed. Then I found out about the new FIAT Spider coming out based on the new Miata. I will give that a try..Yummy....Looks like a better car than the Mazda anyway. But I am guessing they will discount more than Miata. Fiat does not have the reliability numbers but the car is basically a Mazda Miata with a better looking design and much better engine.

These trucks are becoming commodities. They are selling for what people decide they will pay. Until that ends, MSRP+ will be the price of entry .High population. wealthy areas especially have no reason to discount except to their best customers. Many dealers are and will though. Just have cast a wide net.

People in California buy new Corvettes at Kerbecks in NJ. or Criswell's in MD to save $8000+

Really Longo wouldn't budge for me. I guess it could also be timing. Of course they also didn't have what I wanted so it didn't really matter.

I got a little under MSRP from Escondido, had to drive 1.5 hours to get it. I would have waited but I was losing a car and had to do get it.

I paid 1000 off msrp because I took advantage of Toyota's December sale. My birthday is in December so that worked.

I am still negotiating, have been since October 2015. They tried to tell me they don´t have to give anything off MSRP because the trucks are selling, so I told the salesman, I don´t have to buy a truck from you either. I am not in a big hurry to get a new truck, just a want at this time, so I can wait as long as it takes. I will not pay more than 500 over Invoice, yes I know its not true invoice, which is why I stick to the 500 over. So, until they call me ready to deal, I will not be buying a Tacoma. Just yesterday I saw a 2016 Ram 1500 going for the same price as a TRD Sport, as well as Ford still has some 2015 F150´s on the lot at really great deals, so I may not even get a Tacoma now. If you are not in a rush, then set your price, let them sweat a little, catch the dealer at the right time when they need that sell, and you will get it. If you are need of a truck right now, do not let the dealer know that, because you just lost all bargaining power. Also, after the test drive and the salesman asks how you like it, don´t say I love it, make something up, like, it´s o.k., but I am not sure about the room in rear seats, or, I may have to go test drive a Frontier and then decide, that makes the guy sweat a little, and he wants to earn your business.

If you have USAA they have a free Trucar service, not a guarantee to get money off but it's a great negotiating tool. Worked for me both times I bought in the past couple years. $1500 off of MSRP.

I think your best bet is to always initiate contact either by email or some pricing service. That way you are dealing with their "internet sales" people (who generally are not on the typical commission arrangement) and not just the next up sales guy who greets you on the lot, who definitely is.

Best deal I found was through the Costco program, paid factory invoice +50, tries shopping it around, no one else came close. Live in Mass. My TRD sport dlcb 4x4 was 33,400 w the tow package. Included the mats, mud flaps, door sill protection, and exhaust tip

How does it work bringing it back into California? Do you have to wait until it has 7500 miles before you can register it?

I live in Cali too but haven't pulled the trigger yet. They told me that you will pay taxes in az and then pay the difference in local taxes in Cali. You will pay your registration in Cali not in az. There was no stipulations as long as the truck is a 50 state truck
