    What processes did you do?
Connect a wire to port 4 and 13 on the OBD and used the trans temp detection mode?

Also, during the N-D-N-D... cycle, D doesn't really stay illuminated for 2 seconds. You'll see something like N-D-N-D-N-D-N-D-D-D.
Took about 15 minutes for it to come up to temp from; truck was overnight cold.

thanks I am gonna have to do this soon.
This is my first auto I have purchased so not sure 100% how they are supposed to behave. from R-D it takes a little bit to get going and the trans seems so indecisive on what gear to use when cruising at low speeds for me and when I am going slower speeds and then reach a slight grade going up it switches gears around trying to figure what to use and just seems odd as it takes like 2-3 tries before it picks something. I have to really put my foot in it to make it switch a gear properly and actually get moving up the hill.

how many miles on the truck do you have? After somewhere around 1500 the tranny settles down, its learning your driving style then chooses a map close to that.

Well took mine in to the dealer today and they gave it to their top tranny tech and was told after a three hr. wait that the fluid level was fine but since i had called toyota corporate and had a case, they wanted the truck overnight to try and replicate the symptoms in the morning when cold.
Mine does the r to d lag and sometimes harsh engagement intermittenly so ill guess and say they wont find anything. This morning after not driving the truck for three days it shifted fine. Frustrated and hope it does it for them so they can sort it out.

Won't be good for future 2016 Taco resale values if that happens

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
That would not surprise me. How many people would buy a used car knowing it was run with no oil or little oil? I suspect Not many.
Transmission fluid is filled with machine so if 10 trucks are low, it means they all low on fluid, its just not everybody can feel it.
So its safe to assume every 2016 Tacoma so far is running undefiled shredding transmission.

    [sarcasm]
High revving engine spinning torque converter and transmission pump, in little oil.... I don't see what could go wrong here.
    [/sarcasm]

so D lit up at 95 on the pan and started blinking as over temp by 106 at the pan. So doing the check on the pan at say the 100degree mark seems like it should be in the range for the fluid check no?
Why didnt toyota just make the straw long enough so that it could be checked at operating temp. not this stupid in between game crap

I never got a blinking 'D'. I was able to get it done, quick.
The post I linked said he had at least 5 minutes.
At 100 degrees, I would think you're cutting into your check time a lot.
