Remembered a funny story about flying in AK.... @Mtnflyer @justinmbowen
Flew up to Denali one day and on the way back we stopped in Talkeetna for gas. Paved strip, nice airport, generally a busy place but was pretty deserted that day. We were coming in to land when we saw this huge, fat grizzly bear sitting on the end of the runway eating berries. As we flew over, really low, he looked up at us rather annoyed that we interrupted his feast. My FIL got on the radio and announced "attention all Talkeetna traffic. There is a bear on the runway, I repeat a bear on the runway" I cracked up laughing and he asked what was so funny. I told him that that was something I never expected to hear in my lifetime and probably never will hear again. Only in AK...

When I was at Oceana NAS we used to have deer cross the runway at night and you wouldn't see them until too late. They allowed bow hunting on base to keep the population down.

Gaah! That would be freaky. Most of the public strips/anything that sees commercial traffic in AK is fenced in but the animals still find a way in.

    That's awesome!
I've yet to see a bear on a runway. Foxes, deer, the random badger or two, but no bears. I bet that was a sight to see.

I imagine bears aren't a common occurance anywhere! At least most animals run away when they see you coming in right? This bear was not moving for no one!

I bet the grizzly was up for the challenge.

I had to go around for a deer once in a Cessna 152 when I was an instructor. And we had a fox that lived under the runway in a drainage pipe. He was pretty skittish though and would stay clear of the runway we took off and landed.

Was non rev on company aircraft several years ago (not where I currently work) and on roll out we hit a cow. Equipment was a 727-100. Not that it matters but, that particular aircraft was born before me. :)

Cool aircraft. There was a car dealer who owned one and parked it, along with his F-86, at an airport I used to work at...always wanted to ride in both!
