Ok, so heres a question. Which K&N intake do you use? (Or any other intake system) Currently I am looking at the 57-9025 & the 63-9037. The 63-9037 in not offered in CA. The 57-9025 is the only option for CA with higher HP.

    Here is the website: http://www.knfilters.com/search/app...ear=2014&make=TOYOTA&model=Tacoma&engine=4.0L

As you can see the 57 series offers a little more HP than the 63 series. But why is the question? Why would the 57 series be legal in CA with higher HP than the 63 series? What makes the 63 series illegal in CA?

Your pros & cons are much appreciated! :help::wave:

Haven't looked into it for a while but in CA any engine mod has to be CARB certified ( if my memory serves me right). The certification is prob expensive & many companies choose not to do it or just have one product (usually their most expensive) have it. If you don't have the certification on the part you won't get past smog unless you know a guy.

The HP gains from those 'cold air' intakes is bs. I think the only reason to get one is cause they can add some growl to your engine. I had one on a Tundra years ago & it sounds like a super charger (atleast to people that don't know better). I bought a intake off eBay for $100, it's def not carb certified & I just took it off cause I have to get smogged. I'm gonna leave it off cause it didn't make nearly as much noise as I wanted & I don't believe the truck ran as well with it even after resetting the computer.

Stock with a quality filter like stock, Wix, Purolator.

The other options are just noise makers that lighten your wallet.

I have the 77-9025KP but is like the 77-9037KP, just a newer year and different design but not much. I love it. As mentioned above, it doesn't really give you any gains in hp until you floor it and get in the 3500-4k rpm range(which is maybe max 8hp gain). But I mainly like it for the growl it gives and because the air filter is able to be cleaned ever 100k miles and not replaced.

Let me say in my experience, it may be other factors involved, who knows but I saw a .5ish mpg gain. Some say it does but who really knows.

you are wasting your money. Stick to the stock already much colder air intake (those k&n ones pull hot air from the engine bay) and use OEM filters. They are better filters and are cheaper.

and the 57-9025 LOLOL literally replaces the stock cold air intake tube before the filter with a warm air filter.... seriously people buy this shit?

LOL! Thanks for the response guys. A lot of useful info. And now that I think about it, I will stay with stock. Don't really care for the growl. Im more interested in gaining HP. That and I just want the best for my tacoma.

Oh and before I forget, what about upgrading / installing a chip? I know if that was done, it would change all engine settings. Am I correct on that?

Only real way to gain noticeable HP on the taco is the supercharger... anything below that you are just kidding yourself.

I had a K&N 77-9037 on my 2012 4.0, it killed the secondary air pump and switching valves since it sucked in moisture from road spray (you have to relocate the pump to the front of the engine bay and turn it around backwards). It's a $1600 repair bill by the way.

Ok here is another take. What about the TRD Cold Air Intake System? Has anyone mount this set up on their Tacos and if so what are the pros and cons?

Sealed box style like that is best for these trucks. But again, not worth it. The truck comes with a CAI from the factory and doesn't need one. Literally all you gain is high RPM engine scream/Low RPM grunt.

People have issues with the TRDs throwing codes and what not.

If you are going to buy an aftermarket CAI, the aFe Power Stage 2 with the Pro Dry S filter is pretty much the absolute best

K&N filters don't filter very well either. And the factory air intake gets cold air from the top of the wheel well.

Honestly, you can save yourself a bunch of money and just but the aFe Power Pro Dry S filter for your stock intake. Then you'll have a better flowing filter and a washable one.

Thanks guys. Ive never heard of aFe before. Are there any other CAI brands out there that I should consider? Im not looking for super HP, just better air flow and engine response.

There are 3 parts to that equation. More air in, a head/ECU setup that can utilize more air, and an exhaust that can discharge more.

There is nothing so excessively restrictive on the intake or the exhaust side that changing those alone improves much. And the head/ECU is ignored in that equation, so there aren't the results folks long to see.

Boost is another ballgame. But it's an expensive one.
