what kinda tread wear you get with 40 psi? I did the chalk method when I got my new tires, I have a reb cag 4 cyl so its a light truck, bought 8 ply 265/75/16 LT nitto terra grapplers, best result came back with 32 psi in the front and 30 psi in the back, I was actually surprised at how much better the ride feels, definately notice it when hittin small cracks or ruts, although I have noticed a slight decline to my MPG!

What are stock?? There are at least 4 different "stock" tires on the Tacoma's on the dealership lot out here.

Check the manufacturer recommendations for the tires you are using and go from there with things such as the chalk test.

I have stock Firestones on my 2WD 4Cyl AC. They have Nitrogen in them. I asked the dealer to raise the PSI to 35-37 and they refused. They said they cannot do anything over the sticker on the door. I have 40K on the tires, insides look great, outsides are wearing fast. They tell me it is probally because of allignment. I called em BS because it get alligned every 10K. I am thinking of just adding regular air to get them were I want them.

I just threw on 285/70/17 BFG A/T, did the chalk line test and found for me they feel better and get the most efficient contact patch at 36 front and 32 rear.

If I were worried about mpg I wouldn't have thrown on 285's:thumbsup:

My stock tires are 215/70-15. Door sticker says 29psi front and 32 rear. I run 34psi front and 32 rear for better economy but am considering going to the recommended pressures to see how the ride improves and if economy suffers. Can't believe that the front is recommended 3 pounds less than the rear -- there is more weight on the front, right? 2006 4cyl 2wd automatic access cab.

I'm sure they do that because most people won't take the time to add extra air to the rear when they haul stuff.

That chalk line method sounds interesting, I'll have to try it sometime. I usually go by tire wear as it reflects long-term driving conditions. If you are seeing more wear in the center than on the edges you are over-inflated, vice versa and you are under-inflated. I just keep all of my tires at 32 psi and they all seem to wear properly.

Same concept as the chalk line test- but the chalk line test is less long term tire wear...cause you can set it right early on.

32 psi, front and rear. I still have the Dunflop AT20s, but at that tire pressure the truck handles great and the tire wear is very even with 5000 mile rotations.

I have always done the chalk test

I put on 265/75R16 Duratrac's just after getting truck

Im running 32 psi front, and 24 psi rear

It does make sence, our back end is so light.

unless i know im going to haul something heavy, i might add some to the rear

But i have been running this since august, and they ride smooth
already one tire rotation, really no tread wear yet.
    couldnt be any happier .

Stormyday, I've been an aircraft mechanic for 12 years. Nitrogen is the ONLY thing used in aircraft tires and pressurized air systems. The only reason for this is moisture. Nit is infinately more dry than O2. Doesn't have anything to do with chemical properties or anything scientific like that; it just cuts down on dry rotting of tires. I hope you didn't pay a lot to get nit in your tires.
