Mojave Road too cold during December?

Hey guys,

Was thinking of checking out Mojave Road, a 3 day excursion in December. Looks like i want to take days off work and go Monday to wednesday (21st to 23rd) and be back before Xmas weekend.

I know the desert is blazin cold at night, but is Mojave doable during this time? Is it bearable? Or just wait til spring?

I've looked up lots of info on this trip. I think I have a gps waypoint on this and found a map online. I think gearwise, I am ready.

The only thing that worries me now is the coldness during nights?

Oh, and if anyone is bored or wants some travel, I'm open for meeting up some of you folks out there

 

Mojave sounds great! What are your sleeping arrangements? Tenting it or do you sleep in the truck? I have a double cab and I sleep in the truck when I go solo.

 

We have taken this run about 3 times... twice in summer and once in late fall around October... winter out there gets cold and very windy... with any rainfall, be careful with the water crossings and muddy lake beds...

It's always fun to have a few trucks on the trek and watch out for the meth cookers at the abandoned mines...

Camping at Mid-Hills campground costs $12 per truck and they have clean outhouses...

 

It's a little walk, facing a little breeze, on a little bumpy road my friend.

Have you ever slept in a tent at -25°F?

 

my buddy and i have been talking about doing this trail for a few months now

 

Thanks for all the responses guys. Our schedule has been complicated, and now we're narrowing it down to the weekend of the 19th of this month. We plan to go that saturday, and just stay as long as we feel like (prob 3-4 days).

Question about sleeping arrangements above, we plan to camp at the official sites and sleep in the tents. In the car if it's just too cold? don't know.

If any of you guys plan to come out the weekend before xmas, that would be awesome. Still planning things and may be subject to change.

 

^^ Bring a -25°F rated sleeping bag (or anything hot enough for your liking and weather conditions), you can probably rent some at a local outdoors products dealer.
I have slept in every kind of weather, in every season, in every temperature, in every kind of shelter and I know what I am talking about when it comes to winter camping, I also survived a fall in a freezy cold river during a -20°F winter camping too a few years ago.

Bring good sleeping equipment, sleep in underwear in the sleeping bags, basically bring stuff to survive... you don't need to sleep in the car, it's not a good idea, tents is enough.

 

yah, we do that camp in tents and sleeping bags... you will be fine...

thats the same weekend as the Engage Offroad Jingle Jam in Barstow, so a sizeable group will be camping out there
