Getting to business

Hey guys,

So I've been muddling through TW for the past few months grabbing all the information I can about all the different maintenance items one
should perform on their vehicle.

I'm finally here to say thanks! I have a shites ton of parts sitting in my atrium and a bunch of gear oil and I'm taking the plunge this Friday to get my truck sounding and driving great again.

If anyone has words of advice (obvious or otherwise) please feel free to chime in.

New parts going on:

Drivers side front hub bearing w/ new seal and o ring

front calipers and stainless flexible lines (old ones are seized up)

Rear brakes. Drums, shoes, springs, adjusters, cylinders. I already painted the drums with high temp flat black paint.

Upper drive belt pulleys and tensioner. That thing sounds like crap!

Drivers side mirror (old one is broken)

Full synthetic mobile 1 engine oil and funky fresh

$30 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 gear lube in diffs transfer case and transmission(manual)

Oh and the rear breather mod because why not.

ok.

So its done. Only a few issues but she sounds good now and there were only a few extra parts to buy. Here is my timeline if anyone finds it useful. I'll post over on "what did you do today" 2nd Gen so people know the time it takes.

Day 1
9am
start on Friday morning with refurbishing the head lights 45 minutes

10am
Installing a new drivers mirror ~30 minutes.

11am
my buddy and I started on the hub assembly took only 30 minutes tops! We used a Slide Hammer and big towel to get a lot of extra torque out of the slide hammer (3 slams and it was out!).
Got lunch and by 4:30/5 we had just finished getting the bearing pressed by another member on TW and were done re-installing. So... 1 hour of work total plus a schitts ton of driving to get that bearing pressed and get lunch (more cheap beer).

5pm
Instead of moving to the brake calipers, we switched to the idlers and Tensioner pulley, that was a tough one. battery removed, Removed alternator and unbolted (but didn't unhook A/C condenser. There are two brackets holding the AC lines to the frame. Remove these and the world gets a wholeeee lot easier and you can actually move around. Tensioner came out in 10 minutes after we located all of the bolts (5 I think). re-install went very easy and straightforward.
Applied anti-seize to all bolts just in case anything will ever have to come out again. at this point both of us have no idea what happened to the time, it was 1am.
I'd say 6 solid hours of work went into the tensioners and all of the idlers for their replacement.

after we "buttoned" everything up on Friday at 1am we triple checked that the serpentine belt was put on right and started her up. a horrible noise came from under the truck and then a good poof of smoke, followed by a "tink" noise. I opened the hood and immediately turned off the engine. something seized.... i didn't know what and the serpentine belt snapped.


Day 2

8:30am

we found the alternator frozen in place. (I guess thats where the initial loud whinning noise from the engine came from). 3 hours later and we had found and picked up a new alternator and installed it into the engine. New serpentine belt went on and my Taco is niceee and quiet now. ~40 minutes of hands on time to take the old alternator out and new one in along with serp belt.

11:30am

Beginning on the brakes!
Front calipers took quite a while to get off and the new ones on. ~3hrs.

4pm

started rear brakes and new cylinders. Those rear brakes are SUPER simple to install just took a while to get everything apart and back together. ~3 hours plus dinner brake.

9pm. finally, we swapped the tranny and rear dif oil (stopped there because it was just too damn late).

Done. 11:30pm

May I recommend some Bullet...it's the shit. And I'm a bourbon man myself, but I can't turn down the Bullet!!!

 

Got some Colorado Tin Cup American whiskey.

 

never heard of it...I'll have to look for it next trip to the liquor store.

 

It's available up here in vermont, I live in VT but travel back to CT on a regular basis.
