Transmission: Going from reverse to drive when cold. Truck surges forward...?

I would be willing to bet there is strong case of a mis- diagnosis here .
You have " Two "of the classic low on fluid symptoms similar to a bunch of the new 2016 trucks and here we have a transmission assembled with incorrect tolerances that was tested at the factory and worked fine ?

It would be nice to see the paperwork on this one to determine what tolerances the technician is reporting as the problem .
You can watch on the techstream how long it takes to fill the forward clutch with oil .
The error code on the computer for a slipping forward clutch will be similar if the transmission is low
If the technician is stating that it takes too long for the forward clutch to fill with oil when its, cold as the problem , I would be willing to bet the transmission is still very low on fluid .
Regardless , its being repaired under warranty .

 

I second @gearcruncher . it looks like low fluid, and sounds like your low fluid condition damaged transmission.
I would ask for new truck, you have brand new truck that will have transmission swap in car fax. Dealers will lowball you on resale.
To others, you folks understand the concept of oil ? Right?
If you drive truck with low fluid condition you will damage transmission so just adding fluid is too late.

 

But didn't we have a guy in another thread who purposely overfilled his fluid and still had the issue?

 

I had to reschedule it. I am taking it there tonight actually. They said it'll be covered under warranty. Once I get a report back from Ganley, I'll post....

 

There was mention of this in another thread but that was
when there were issues with the proper fill procedure . I am sure
he would have posted back by now if his problem continued .

 

It takes long time to purge all air from the system and get transmission to shift properly. This is not like A750F/E transmission, those 6 speeds have thermostat which simply is trapping air in system. (even if you set thermostat to fully open during measuring procedure)
It takes long time and quite an effort to get rid of all the air. Trust me on this one, once you get air in the system it is absolute pain in the @ss to purge it all.
So somebody filling transmission and not getting results right away is not surprising.
It took me quite a time to get my AB60 correct, no thanks to retarded Toyota and their techs. Because it takes time to set correct level, no dealer can get that right except from factory. Because either you know how much fluid you need to put or you need to keep filling until all air is out.

 

And this was after he had it " topped off " at the dealer.

 

Yes , we havnt heard back from the OP in regards to if his transmission is working better or not . It would be nice to get an update

 

Update: They told me they could not "duplicate" the issue. I told them I'd prefer that they empty the tranny fluid and do it all over again and check that it's not low, as there are NUMEROUS threads complaining about this issue from people with 2016 models w/ the tow package. They assured me that they will do so, and let me know if it's low. All I can do is hope for the best. I was skeptical about buying an auto transmission and I wish I would have saved the thousands and went with the manual tranny. I'll def get a manual tranny in two years when my lease is up. Lessons learned, I suppose...

 

Got it back from the dealer. Dealer said it was almost one quart low on tranny fluid. They topped it off after checking it at proper operating temperature. Only time will tell if it makes a difference. Either way, I'm definitely buying a manual transmission next time. For many reasons. Thanks to Ganley Toyota for doing the right thing and honoring it under warranty and giving me a loaner car (Mike Ash, Service).

Glad you managed to convince them to finally check the fluid . I just hope you didn't do too much damage during the time you drove around with the fluid low . 1 quart is a lot of fluid to be low . Hold on to your paper work

As I have mentioned before , one of you guys need to start a petition to get extended warranty on your transmission after all this crap you guys are going through .
I can guarantee other members here will have no issues signing it .

I drove it this am cold....not as cold as it's been in the past but still a "cold start". To be quite honest, it seemed to feel a lot better from R to D when cold and also felt like it shifted smoother thru the entire power band 0-60 mph. I def will keep my paperwork in case there are any long-term issues. Just wanted to share that w/ anyone having similar issues w 2016 models w/ tow package.

 

I had the same issues took it an I was one quart low.

 

Dear gear cruncher that will not kill a rear end spider gears.You will smoke high gear clutches in the automatic transmission.spider gears lack of lube or massive donuts.I have eaten rear gears spiders are slide loaded.Back to the issue talk to tranny guys and ps not a lot know this tranny inside out.
