You could also use the aggressor penalty here as an official:

Aggressor
–The aggressor in an altercation shall be the player who continues to throw punches in an attempt to inflict punishment on his opponent who is in a defenseless position or who is an unwilling combatant.

Which would lead to this under rule 46.11
A player who is deemed to be both the instigator and aggressor of an altercation shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a majorpenalty for fighting, a ten minute misconduct (instigator) and a game misconduct penalty (aggressor).

46.15 talks about when a Match can be given at the NHL level, including:
A match penalty shall be assessed to a player who punches an unsuspecting opponent and causes an injury.

So if you think Polak took enough of a beating there that an injury, even that bloody nose, is likely the match could still be called as well.

All in all it goes to show you how many options an NHL, or any level of official, referee has to deal with each situation according to his own interpretation of events. I don't think any of these would be the wrong call... other than the call that was made on the ice because I couldn't find roughing discussed in any of the fighting rules as an additional penalty on the same play.

 

Agreed, brutal call by the officials. Then Deboer got a bench minor for arguing.

It's good to see the league is adjusting the call.

 

The anti-Oilers sentiment is strong in this Thread. I get that. Every time an Oilers player touches someone else.....there's hell to pay. Every time an Oilers player falls awkwardly.....there's hell to pay. Every time an Oilers player beats someone up.....there's hell to pay.
The Oilers are definitely the whipping boys of the NHL.

 

It was a puss move to go after an player in the midst of a change. I don't care about Edmonton...at all. I fucking hate San Jose seeing as I'm a fan of the Ducks. You could even say I hate San Jose more than I hate Edmonton. That doesn't mean I don't care when another player looks to intentionally try to injure another player. Everyone in this thread sees the that the refs called it wrong...and now so does the NHL.

 

The "fight" was no different than the Domi vs. Garbutt altercation that resulted in Domi getting a game.

I am really disliking this whole "OMG MY TEAMATE GOT HIT LEGALLY; TIME TO DROP THE GLOVES." Man up and accept that hitting is part of the game. If its a dirty hit then I can see it, but now its literally a fight after every single legal big hit. Its getting ridiculous

 

Fighting is a part of the game. For now. Even if you lay someone out with a clean hit it probably looks worse to the actual players. Maybe they didn't see the clean hit but saw their teammates head snap back as they fell to the ice. I enjoy the altercations after the hit and after the whistle in front of the goalie. It's a team sport. Furthermore, hockey emphasizes "team" more than any other sport out there. IMO.

I'm not referring to the Nurse bullshit. I just mean in general. If a player decides to lay a big hit, clean or not. They better know that others won't take kindly to it. Same for the players who like to stay in front of the goalie for deflections and screens and want to bitch when they get roughed up after the whistle. It's all a part of the game...what Nurse/Domi did isn't and they will be dealt with.
