@ZUK is definitely the man to talk to. I followed write-ups on his site to build both thirds in my 82 and both in my Tacoma and they have been holding up great.

I'd say you need to add some more shim to get the pinion closer. You're not far off at all though. What's the backlash specs on a d60? I know Toyota stuff is .006-.010

I always splurge on tools. Always. You can never have too many, and you can always pass them on.

I followed his builds when I set up my Toy 8.8 and Front clam on my Taco pre-sas, and never had an issue.

D60 backlash spec is .004-.009" according to the Bible lol

Yea as i have gotten older i agree, i used to half ass everything in high school and college and build my own tools, now i just go buy the correct one. Thank god my wife is on the same page with that, and if we/I need a certain tool to get something done, it gets rolled into the project budget.

That front clam setup had top be fun, those look like a bitch!

I still make some tools, ie the case spreader, but I paint them to make them look nice n shit.

The clam was a bitch bc you had to assemble both halves back together and read out the backlash through the fill plug hole on the side with a special indicator that reads at 90°

No the pinion was still shallow, thats why the contact pattern on the drive side is to the outside of the ring gear. I figured it was but wanted to see what some pirates had to say and they agreed. I increased my pinion shim by .005 and then two more shot re shimming the carrier yielded a decent patter with .0065 " BL. Pictures of said pattern in a few.

    Stoopid :D

Thats from driving back to the parking lot in front wheel drive with the pinion head loose in the pumpkin, thus why I removed my rear shafts for the drive home, so the carrier didn't turn ;)

14 bolts are just like Toyota axles and are very simple. Only shimming you have to do is on the pinion. The carrier uses threaded adjusters to locate it and set backlash.

Still looks shallow to me. Try a bigger jump in shim like .010 or .015

That can happen under hard deflection too.

I was thinking the same thing, for a off road rig is better to have it a little deep to have room to walk up some.

Looking better. I'd still go a little deeper but that's my preference
