Yes, mine are rusted too, even the ones on the tailgate. I've been thinking about shocks too, everyone speaks highly of the Bilsteins but my truck is not lifted.

They did not install it all due to some parts not worn out yet.

I have another question. While I do not have brake problems, the rust on the parts in my wheel are bad. Would replacing this get into additional labor? I snapped some pics to better show what I am referring to. What parts would need replacing? I found this during a search but am not sure. I think the first pic is my brake drum in the rear.

Good deal. My main thing is that I want to invest in parts that would be labor intensive to replace. Since they are tearing my truck down anyway. I still cannot find a definitive answer as to what is included in this part list. Part of the problem is that I do not know the part names, I've been researching my ass off. Just like the pics I posted. I want to put some money away to make the most of it.

I know there are some better after market parts available that are better than Toyota. I just want to have my ducks in a row so to speak.

No, I asked this question when Toyota told me they were ordering a new frame. I asked will it then be undercoated? They said no, it's a different metal a different build. I've not yet found out what this new material is, but seeing some of the horror stories about the undercoating....I'm glad.

I hate to say it but damn, I've got friends with non Toyota trucks and they aren't rust buckets. I really do work hard and keep my baby clean and waxed. Like I said before, when I got it 3 years ago, I crawled under with a wire brush and a 3m pad, scoured it. Then coated it with POR 15, which is not cheap.

Just a couple months ago I had to replace a lower idler pulley on the AC side because it was rusted out. I had to order it from Toyota.

Yes, they told me the hole was on the inner rail front passenger side. One of the first things I did when I got my truck was follow advice on this forum to add a tube to re route the ac discharge that originally dripped right on top of the frame. Just like you my muffler is rusted, the CAT shield is rusted out. I want to know exactly what is going to be replaced, not these obscure part package numbers that I can't research.

I have a 2.7 4 cylinder, like yourself and had rust between the layers next to the muffler, that look like it ballooned the frame where the rust expanded it along the rail, but there were no holes in the frame.

Did you have a hole in your frame by the muffler or was it just rust between the layers like mine that failed the inspection? If you had a hole, where was the hole by the muffler on your frame?

    Thanks,
    Mark

My posting was in response to "george3" that said his was failed for the frame near his muffler and was just curious if it was a hole or excessive rust between the layers.

I agree, when I brought my truck in 1 year ago for the LSC inspection. The service agent asked me if this came from the south, because the frame looked so good. Seeing how this frame has lived it's whole life in salty Massachusetts, I know my constant washing of the frame made a difference, but wished Toyota's service manual advised treating the frame annually with a product like fluid film, to extend the life of the frame or at least extend the warranty of the frame after the LSC, like the older Tacoma's received. I don't see any other car company replacing 11 year old frames, seeing how this is a voluntary campaign and not a recall, so I really can't complain. You'd think even with the 25 million settlement from Dana, and the years and years of the same rusting frame issue with the older Tacoma's, Toyota would change the design/manufacture/material of the frame, because it must cost money, customer loyalty and just plain headache for both of us.

That is truth. I don't know of any other car maker requiring undercoating that often. Like I said, I lost my first truck to the frame rot, they stood by me and I bought another Toyota. Have been diligent in cleaning and putting the POR 15 on, washing waxing. I'm eager to find out what this "new metal" is in the frame they are going to replace. I'm not bitching, but want to make the most of replacing parts while I have free labor for the tear down and rebuild.
