607's Tacoma

I always enjoy reading through the other builds on here so I figured I would make my own.

I'll start off with saying that after my second divorce I decided to focus on other areas of my life and now I'm the owner of this Tacoma. I've owned several off roading trucks in the past but never a Tacoma and this has always been one of my dream trucks.

I spend a lot of time exploring the back country so this build is more focused on overlanding.

Nice looking Tacoma! How are you liking the 4inch lift? I haven't seen very many of those around here.

 

Thanks! I'm really glad I went with this lift. My previous toyotas all had 3" lifts on them and I wanted to go a different route this time. One of the reasons you hardly see 4" lifts is because these are drop bracket lifts. If you go off roading in rocky or need more articulation these drop bracket lifts will be less effective than others. The main reason I went this route was that I wanted more lift and I wanted to keep my CV axles in a good position. I spent most of my time driving down old logging and fire roads so this lift works fine for that.

 

Today I took some time and changed out the stock shocks with new 5100s. These are the ones made for the 4" RCD lift. I wanted to change them out because with the regular BDS lift you are left with a spacer on top of the stock shocks. Going this route I was able to get rid of the spacer. So far the ride is a lot better. Still not as smooth as the stock setup but definitely worth it.

I'm really happy with this lift.

I did for a while but yesterday I changed the shocks out for longer ones. I got the same ones they sale for the RCD lift. Ride is so much better now that the spacer is removed.

 

Thanks for showing, I love the 4". Everyones 2 1/2"-3" just doesn't do it for me. Now to save some $$$lol

Did you have any major mods or cutting for this install?

 

Unfortunately yes. Drop bracket lifts require you to cut out part of the cross member and then add a stronger section. Not something that I would take on myself so a shop did it. This is also another one of the reasons why people stay away from it but I was fine with the install.

 

I am getting some grief on a different thread for even thinking about it. No matter how you go about lifting it there is always going to be a issue with something, but with the drop bracket the CV has less stress and the upper arms and ball joints have less angle and you still get more lift. Don't want to cut and weld, but want more than a $2000.00 2" lift. I may have exaggerated a bit on the price.

 

Yeah I got the same grief. Most of the grief pointed to the fact that this lift will limit your off road capability in the articulation factor. For me this wasn't an issue because I don't intend on doing any hard core off roading. My main concern was the CV stress and ball joint issues with regular lifts. After adding the lift I would do it again. I love the look and ride. Even more so I love the fact that I have the confidence that I'm not going to need new CV axles every few years.

 

After putting a deposit down back in December I finally got the call that my camper was in. I spent the last few nights camping...this is awesome.

How much did your lift set you back? I have been debating with 4in as well. Previous Tacomas had 3in as well.

Looking at yours makes me want to do the 4 even more. How does the ride feel compared to stock? Ride smooth day to day?

The lift alone was $1800 and another $800 for the install.

After the lift was installed the ride was pretty stiff and I wasn't happy with that but it looked amazing. Eventually I started researching the lift and found out that the spacers could be replaced with Bilstein 5100 shocks that are used with a RCD 5" lift. I swapped out the shocks myself and the ride was night and day. So much smoother!

So far I have around 10,000 miles on this lift, and about 4,000 of that is on dirt roads. I highly recommend this lift but understand that it is a drop bracket lift so if you plan on doing any hardcore off road I would go another route.

Thanks for info! I have been seriously considering doing the 4" on mine. Do you have 35's with 20in wheels?

How is your MPG? That would be awesome if you could send the link for the shocks.
