Ewww no fuck the third gens haha. If you still want a truckish feeling you gotta go older. Third gen an up started having hatches. Also if you go with the sawzall idea that'll make it a lot worse. Gotta have that tailgate

I was looking at the 80s 4runners for a while there, I really love the idea of a removable top. Would be fantastic during the summer, especially down here at the beach!

Still removable top would be awesome, although going from a 2004 to an 80s vehicle probably won't go over well

To be honest I'm not a fan of the look of the front of 3rd gens, but looks like a great option for a 4runner for myself. Nothing a good offroad bumper can't fix hahaha. I'm pretty sure I'm a bit interested now that I'm on 4runners hahaha, looking at their buyers guide.

Ehh 3rd gen is good for dd. Getter gas mileage. If that's your goal though you could even go mommy mobile status. The older you go though the slightly better offroading capability you'll get though. 2nd gens have the worst gas mileage, but are still an improvement over your taco. They also have the tailgate and are more lifted stock. Downside is the potential head gasket issue if you go v6, but there is a 4 cylinder option. That engine is known as one of the most reliable you can get. Another perk to the 2nd gen is they are the cheapest and its really easy to find replacement parts for them. I see them all the time in junkyards. 3rd gens have the more reliable v6 and better gas mileage and power but no tailgate and are more expensive, not to mention you start getting annoying electronic things like stability control that beeps at you when your having fun. 4th gens I'm not sure how they are versus the 3rd gen gas mileage wise but they are more expensive. Only perk for those in my opinion is the v8 option but 4x4 v8s are a little rare and cost a pretty penny. They're also the lowest of those options require modification to make them start to look good. There's a little brake down on the options. Personally I really like the 2nd gens but that's a lot do to with how good they are stock and how easy parts are to find. Unlike with later gens, most of the truck from that age is compatible with the 4runner so it makes parts even easier to find. Doors, fenders, pretty much everything from the front doors forward is swappable. Like I said biggest downside is the head gasket but if you maintain your engine you can make it work, not to mention there are extra little things you can do to prevent it, all things I will be doing to mine in the future. I've seen some with 350,000 that never had it happen. Just gotta take care of it. There's a lot more things to consider also but I'm ranting so I'mma stop now haha

First of all I currently get 15 in the city, 18/19 freeways. Once I tune it up I'm sure I'll have better gas mpg . Personally I would like something that still gets at least, (hopefully better) mpg than my truck. The heck is stability control lol, my truck has zero electronics hahaha. Thanks for all the info. I was looking at 2nd gens for a little while there, though the head gasket problem is quite iffy since you really never truly know how well maintained the previous owner keep it.

So now the quad is gone are you going to sell your truck and get a Fj or runner? I'm sure your truck is a quick sell if you post it.

Oh here's one thing that keeps making me stray form 4runners. The 4runners have a short wheel base in comparison to a tacoma, so wouldn't it be easier to roll or tip it when offroading? Especially when lifted.

Could've sworn you said 15 highway lol. Anyways yea it can be a little touchy but if you can find a 4cyl you're set. The 22re is bullet proof. On the v6 you can always take preventative measures or even just replace them when you can afford it just so then you know where you stand on it. Another couple options include the 3.4 swap and getting new headers for the 3.0. Different headers are supposed to fix the hg issue because they don't get as hot which greatly helps the head gasket. What I'll be doing myself is heat wrapping the exhaust and putting in a 180 degree thermostat with a weep hole. That'll help my engine run much cooler and hopefully solve the issue permanently
