Don't settle for them not doing everything that needs done TM. Just insist that's what will make or break the deal, and they will take care of you.

As far as the TRD SR5 4x4's, my '03 double cab is a good example. It has the rear locker, automatic with overdrive, and every other feature that's available with these units. The '98 extra cab I recently sold also was an SR5 TRD 4x4, and it too had all the bells and whistles, so insist on such a truck and don't take anything less, you'll be happy that you did!

hey i know im going to get bashed up for saying this but its my honest thoughts about making the move. although the 1st gen are great trucks i still like the 2nd gen more. whent to go see the first gen the other day dubble cab 4X4 trd in all honestly it was a great tuck but just thought it would be a little tight for those long trips up north. unless you want a toy truck.but i need this thing for work. and felt claustrobic so ive desided just to stick with a 2nd gen hopefully i find a great deal soon

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, and yours is duly noted! Opinions make the world go round, and except for people expressing their opinions this would be a pretty dull place!

The 1st gens are a bit more compact, and to many that's a real plus. To those who like to get off road into tight places where a larger 2nd gen starts to look and feel like it may not fit, a 1st gen 4x4 is a real advantage! With extra cab and double cab setups room inside is plenty sufficient for all but the most claustrophobic Taco pilot!

Those who seldom get off road, or when they do it's under fairly tame conditions and mostly they use their truck to haul themselves and their stuff from point A to point B and back again, the slightly larger 2nd gen has appeal.

So its really about what floats your boat when it comes to needs, wants, and pocketbook. Taco people fall on both sides of the 1st gen/2nd gen question just as naturally as they do on every other question life throws at them - and that's what makes the world go round!

Yeah but Rio-we've already done the math and 1st-gens have a 1"x1" LARGER bed than 2nd-gen AND we can tow up to 6000lbs! Who really can deny the capability of a 1st gen? Excuse me but I don't consider my truck a "toy" compared to a 2nd-gen.

You point out the obvious Ridge, and of course I'm in agreement with you! And for those who are still sorting out 1st gen/2nd gen questions, the math you refer to should weigh into their decision.

Add to that the fact that 2nd gens have moved more into the realm of larger more cushy trucks, running a close second to the Tundra in size and overall creature comfort, and you have a lot of 2nd gen people asking the kind of questions that have brought TM back to the 1st gen side of the Tacoma aisle!

Sorry Rio- I was really referring to this guy's post coining the 1st gens as "toys" compared to 2nd-gens. to clarify, they are BOTH badass in their own ways. Claustrophobic?? Again, I'm 6'1". I am pretty darn sure I've read the legroom is identical between the two gens-the 2nd gen only has width and a little legroom in the back over us.

Well it's hardly a topic I'd bother our Savior with:D but sufficient to say what I see out here in San Francisco-a LOT of 1st-gen Tacomas are used as worktrucks. Plumbers contractors painters etc. the bodies are beat to s**t but the drivetrains are still humming!

In the last 6 weeks I have seen more new I4 Reg Cab Tacos being used as work trucks than I have my entire life.
