I am in the process of prototyping a divider system, since I determined that the items I wanted to put in the console would not fit very well with the commercial solutions I have found so far. The prototype is made with cardboard and the tray is from a restaurant to-go box. I am probably going to make the final one from Masonite, but we'll see. The purpose of the prototype is to live with a solution for awhile, make modifications as I go, and get to a design and dimensions I like before making something more permanent.

For a tray , I was thinking of one that lays on top of the divider and the tray would have a finger hole or two so it could be removed when needed
I have not got around to making one yet

Well I tweaked my prototype a bit, didn't like the tray much (got in the way for this small console), and made room for a few CD cases. Today I decided to go ahead with a solution, and ended up using a scrape of 1/4" MDF I had that was big enough. I traced the cardboard template/prototype onto the MDF, cut it out with my bandsaw, lightly sanded the ends, and installed it. Here are some pictures...

Honestly have no clue, don't own any guns.
I can measure certain dimensions though, if you'd like.
