Fellow aviation geek. I have been working in it for 16yrs now, mostly on the GA and FBO side of the field, however while trying to get out of the industry i interviewed for an airline for interview practice, and now almost 4 yrs later here i am working at a major. I am in maintenance safety, primarily on the vehicle and building side of the operation. Before that i worked line service and for airport authorities ranging from a small grass strip in high school, to a large FBO at a major airport, and now one of the largest airlines in the world. I went to college to become a pilot, however i was deprogrammed by the pilots i worked around everyday and stayed on the ground and got a business degree instead. Someday i would like to get a plane as i met my wife in aviation school. Its crazy how much the industry has changed, flying is becoming a viable career again and the airlines are profitable! I heard a bunch of horror stories working on the private side about working for an airline, however its been great. It also helps that I'm in the middle of the food chain, and did my time at the bottom at other companies. I definitely miss working around the planes, but DO NOT miss dealing with corporate pilots evrey day LOL.

My advice to people looking to get in is: Get a degree in ANYTHING but aviation because it is a volatile business, have a back up plan, and whatever you do DO NOT piss anyone off. It's amazing how many people i recognize from early on in my career on my travels throughout our network. Its a very small, very political industry and i have seen a lot of people get blackballed and conversely completely incompetent people get ahead based on who they interact with.

I don't know what half of that means, haha.
Nice advice. I had come to that conclusion myself and am studying business in the event that some tragedy happens and I lose my medical and can't fly. It's easy to fly with a business degree. It is a little more difficult to be a businessman with a professional pilot degree.

Lately, though, the Reaper drivers are driving up ordinance rates that the fighter guys can't match. It's insane. They leave their forward bases full, come home empty, get new ordinance, and do it again.

Take that, ISIS. Death by X-Box!

Yup, i went to school and worked with a few people that realized that the career wasn't for them or they were sick of getting laid off (middle 2000's) so they made a change, then had to go back to school because a "flight management" degree doesn't mean squat LOL. Its a shame when people drink these schools kool aide (i was one of them, along with my wife lol) we switched in time though.

Wow. My ex is a pilot at Jet Blue. She went in as an FO on ERJ-145s, and then made Captain I believe. No idea what type she is in now, I imagine Scarebus. She also ran a crashpad in Queens a few blocks from LaGuardia.

A-6E's were better and more accurate at bombing in head to head competitions. "Fighter pilots make movies but attack pilots make history!" LOL

Nope, they might get offended! I had to get out/retire cause I couldn't stand what it has turned into. Some good changes over the years, but when any sailor can, and is told to jump the chain of command if he or she has a problem and you don't even get the courtesy of a heads -up or a chance to fix the problem, I call bullshit!
