2016 aftermarket tow hitch / wiring mounting installation question

So if I install this Curt tow hitch and Hopkins wiring harness plug in version what else do I need to retrofit the black tow hitch oval on my bumper? New at tow hitches and there are a lot of connectors 7 pin, 5 pin etc. the wiring harness has a 4 pin flat connector. Just wondering if I can buy a flat 4 pin plug and mount it in the blank oval? If its that easy...

I want to mount everything in the blank oval so its clean and dosent hang down at all

 

I am toying with the idea of buying the factory 7 pin/ 4 pin receptacle that snaps into the bumper and wiring to that. The big problem is... the back side of that is a female connector that receives the round factory connector which is only on the truck equipped with the factory installed tow package. One would have to source the connector on the factory harness. Since this is most likely impossible, the other option is to figure out a way to solder wires into the back side of the oval bumper receptacle and pot the wires. This would give you something to wire to. You could even wire a brake controller if you chose to. Seems like a lot of trouble to go through to tow with a truck. Toyota could have easily left a plug back there and sell the parts to install a nice factory 4 pin.

Check to see that the Hopkins plug and play is for the 2016 and not the 2015. To my knowledge, no one on this site has successfully wired their 2016 for trailer lights. At least no one has done so without cutting the truck wires. I have not heard of anyone doing this yet. It seems everyone is installing the hitch and waiting on some non destructive wiring options.

 

So the plug in hopkins shown here needs some additional wiring?

I don't think this requires extra wiring, but I do think this is for the 2015 Tacoma. Call e-trailer. I believe the tail light connectors changed with the new Tacoma.

 

Am in same boat. New truck no wiring harness. The factory plug is available on ebay but the factory wiring harness is over $200. That plugs in between light wiring and factory plug that mounts onto bumper. Am considering hard wiring an existing generic kit onto factory plug. Thoughts ??

 

Your position mirrors mine. Next time I am by the dealer, I plan I will have a look at the OEM bumper 7/4 pin that installs into the bumper. Last time I was there, we looked at the diagrams and the parts guy said he would order the bumper plug and keep them in stock. This part receives a round plug that only exists on Tacomas that came with a hitch factory installed (at least on the SR). The reason I want to look at this part is to see if it is feasible to terminate wires to the contacts. I prefer not to cut into the truck wiring, but it seems like Toyota wants you to do it this way. I don't know why Toyota did not make their trucks easily up-gradable for towing. It is like they didn't realize someone might want to tow something with their truck.

 

thank you.. it looks like the plug in the bumper is oval not round. so it fits the 4/7 pin plugs that are available on ebay (for about $60.)
Ours is a factory bumper but it has rubber plugs for the hitch and lights

$65 PT725-34140 Toyota 7-Pin and 4-Pin Trailer Connector

PT725-34140 is the OEM plug-in 7/4 Pin socket. Being that the Tacoma should be pre-wired for the brake controller, there should be a capped socket hiding back by the bumper. Replace the filler plug with the socket, and plug in the OEM harness. Simple job.

 

According to dealer the vin# shows that it is not pre-wired.
The Toyota harness alone is over $200. And add $60. for the plug.

 

Does anybody have the p/n for the OEM wire harness mentioned above?
I called the dealer and they could not find it for a 2016....

 

This should only need additional wiring if you plan to use a brake controller.

Hoppy # 40975 ( http://www.hopkinstowingsolutions.c...ti-tow_ford_gm_74_oe_replacement_1999-09.html ) is the Toyota "knock-off" for the 7/4 plug in the bumper.
Hoppy # 40985 ( http://www.hopkinstowingsolutions.c...ng-harnesses/universal_multi-tow_harness.html ) plugs into the back of the 40975 to allow DIY wiring.
Hoppy # 48175 ( http://www.hopkinstowingsolutions.c...cle_and_12_trailer_end_4-wire_flat_set_2.html ) will allow you to adapt from the 40985 harness to the T-Connector pictured above. You could also skip this part by cutting off the 4-flat socket on the T-Connector and wiring directly to the 40985.

To use a brake controller, you will have to run additional wiring from the left over wires on the 40985 up to the cab to make the necessary connections under the dash (power, ground, brake switch)

 

On the 4 pin side of that connector would you have to solder the wires on from the Hopkins plug kit or does the flat 4 pin plug directly into the 7/4 connector on the 4 pin side

This pic of the back of that connector looks like its solder only, or maybe there is a plug for the 7 pin side only and the 4 pin is just made live off of the 7 pin connection

Seems like if you add this to the Hokins plug kit you might be good. Just leave the other wires taped up?

 

Would work but I agree the problem is a clean install with the factory oval there may not be enough "pin" on it to hard solder good connections

The same more or less. However this one does not have the option of a 4-Flat trailer plug in without using another adapter.
