Im pretty new to trucks so excuse my post

    Manual states

Neutral then switch into 4hi then into 4lo then back into drive for 4 lo mode

Neutral again then 4lo > 2wd then back into D for normal mode

Now onto my question........The other day i was stopped behind an accident and i was messing around with my GF. I was in D and told her lets go off road and around these cars and she was messing around and actually switched the truck into 4lo without me being in NEUTRAL. Did that screw anything up? I was stopped in D with my foot on the break. I didn't even realize it cause it didn't make any sound and only noticed after driving a little and looking down at my dash icons.

it might have refused to go into 4lo, I know when I tried to switch to 4h above 62mph, it refused and beeped at me.

edit: Rock beat me to it.

Gotta love these new electronic $WD engagement systems. You just can't destroy your gears like in the "old days". No more grinding, clanking.... So yes as others have said, the new system is really "idiot proof". I don't know why they even bother providing instructions anymore.

It may show $Lo and it will be flashing at you. That flashing means that it hasn't engaged. But will if all the right condifions are met (in neutral, not moving over 5mph, etc)

They're right. Same with my dad's GM truck, you try 4Lo outside of neutral and it just flashes like 5 times and doesn't shift into it. You'd know if you went to 4LO.

You probably saw 4LO flashing and thought it was on. I have achieved 4LO while moving in Drive, I forgot about the neutral requirement and it finally dropped into 4LO after driving backward for 20 feet. I thought it was broken until I remembered the neutral requirement.

OP, do you know the restrictions of driving in 4 wheel drive?

Time to go find a dirt path an get familar with your 4x4 system. Take out the card on your drivers side visor and read it. Take it easy and have fun.
