I could get an access cab 4x4 and bolt down a pair of seats in the bed.
Opinions? Yes this is legal in CA if they're done correctly, but I'm sure I'll get pulled over every time I use them

If I may: For the 2nd gen folks (I'm not sure how robust the 1st gen and 4runner fenders are)

Here's some info I posted on a different thread: (I'm no expert at off roading but I have been a power plant operator/tech since 2002 - current both in the Navy and civilian world.) Just a couple things to ponder and maybe help some people out:

For those that are planning to hit overland territory and are putting 2 batteries next to one another in the OEM battery location keep in mind the fender you're mounting those to is like tin foil and static load from 2 batteries coming down on the fender after moderate to heavy thudding around could cause problems. You might consider mounting your aux battery to the bed or behind the back seat. If you're just fire road trailing then you're good mounting 2 side by side.

As for a charging relay a great option would be the Blue Sea ML ACR 12v, 500 Amp. It's fully auto WITH a manual override from the cab and engine bay. Draws only a quarter amp for 20 milliseconds when switching, eliminates a solenoid, and it of course ensures your engine battery is fully charged before charging your secondary battery. Add a monitoring device for 20 bucks and you have a well thought out water resistant system at a very reasonable price. The blue sea unit allows for self jumping, hence the manual over ride feature to force them to parallel. The unit also isolates the main battery from the aux battery when the engine is shut off and the aux battery runs low as to prevent the engine battery from being pulled on.

The NL and IBS systems are way too expensive for a unit that's not sealed (water resistant). And the monitoring device for the NL system is too large and really doesn't have a place to mount it in our rigs. Nevertheless, all 3 systems have their positives and negatives (no pun intended) -- I'm just adding a it more info for everyone to ponder before dropping their hard earned coin.

Also, I've read up on doing the big 3 battery/alternator mod and it's something I'm definitely doing to get the most out of the OEM alternator without shelling out the cash for an aftermarket alt.

Also, Danny (@dtaco06 ) and anyone else interested in dual batteries: you might find this thread interesting in your free time if you haven't already: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ets-see-them-multiple-batterys-thread.295653/

How do I find my way to this list. You all seem chill for the most part. Looking forward to meeting some of you in JT

Great question. The main reason is redundancy. The more electrical doohickeys, gizmos, and gadgets you install you're going to want to tie in an auxiliary battery to expand your bus tie. As @sladesdaddy1022 mentioned, one battery will be for your vehicle and winch (There's difference in opinions regarding which battery to tie a winch into but if you ask me I want my winch tied into the battery closest to the alternator) and the aux battery will be for your, well, aux accessories. Additionally, installing an automatic relay switch (bus transfer unit) will also protect you from draining your main battery by isolating it from the aux battery should you happen to have a few too many tasty beverages and pass out -- or just having a good time and forgetting to start your rig to recharge. Here's an added plus to a second battery: self-jumping. Say you're in the middle of nowhere and your main battery takes a shit. You can either self jump your main battery or tie in and use your aux battery (providing you have a full size aux battery) as your engine battery. Redundancy, added power supply, and with the auto relay you won't be stranded somewhere because you partied too hard and passed out with a flood light or radio on.
