This is the best DIY I've seen, it's for a 4Runner though. The Tacoma is very similar, the part # is one number different I think, and drain and fill quantity is a little different and the skid plates will look different. Not sure if there's a DIY for the 2016 Tacoma yet. Here's another good video that was done on a Highlander with the same filter.

Unless I missed it, I didn't see a torque spec for the Ubolts?
Many of us, including myself, have found them to be loose... just a thought.

Thought maybe it could go right below the propeller shaft specs.

Sorry, what's the torque? Are you talking about the u-bolts on the leaf springs?

Yes, the u-bolts on the leaf springs. There are four nuts (2 u-bolts) on each side and they are 52ft-lbs each

Major update to the OP with a lot more info. Finally completed this on my 4Runner, so was pretty easy to modify and post for the Tacoma. Please help me fill in the gaps and provide links to good DIY threads.

If I was putting them on after taking them off, I'd probably do an X pattern but I was just torquing them down.

yes x-pattern however add incremental torqueing as well, if they are at say 30f/lb then torque to say 40 ea then 45 ea then 52ea.

@splitbolt is that atf check supplement in your post above applicable to the 3rd gen? I don't remember seeing that in the manual.
