    Hey everyone

I've got a 2000 pre-runner with 116K miles. I'm thinking about selling and getting a 4WD. I love this truck and it really is in great shape overall. That being said I need to do timing belt etc...as it is overdue based on mileage. But if I'm going to sell, do you think that'd really help me get top dollar? I'm not trying to make my problems anyone else's, but I also don't want to put in all the $$$ if it's not really going to increase selling price. I'm torn.

This is my first Tacoma and I hate to sell, but I want 4WD as I'm trying to move out west to Colorado, Wyoming, or Montana (who ever will hire someone from GA)

To all those out west, is 4WD necessary? Obviously it'd be helpful but I'm not really into hardcore off roaring (too many hobbies already) but want to be able to make it around even into the mountains and such for camping and other shenanigans. Any thoughts?

When i was in the market to buy my second tacoma, one of the first questions I would ask was about what maintenance that had been done especially the timing belt and water pump. That was not an expense I wanted to obtain in Buying a new vehicle. It depends on the buyer though some might not mind because they will try to get your price down because it is due for work and they don't mind or have the skill to do it themselves.

should you do your timing? yes. will it increase price? you can bullshit your way into 200 more asking price. yes. anymore than 200? no.

is 4wd necessary for the west? no. is it awesome as shit to have cause you can check out places you never knew existed? yes :)

but if you want to camp. no you don't need 4wd. any campsites that you can plan ahead more than 30 minutes for in advance will not need 4wd. if you really want to camp in a 4wd, you wont be able to plan ahead it. youll just go wherever your 4x will take you and make camp there. watch out for bears ;-)

4WD or you will miss out on a lot of cool places. It helps to get away from the tourist trap campgrounds. I got around just about everywhere but the hard core rock crawling trails with a 99 Supercharged, 4x4 on 33's, winch and factory locker.
Good luck out west..... I miss Colorado

Both very valid points, and kind of the same lines I'm thinking. I'm not trying to screw someone over.

I guess if I really want to check out crazy places or be off the beaten path, I can take the dual sport. Did some riding out in the San Juans last summer...epic area, some of which I don't need to be driving a truck.

or pulls up into the campground right next to you where you thought you were taking your badass truck off path to nature.

Move out here with your prerunner, then decide if you feel you need 4wd. Take a look around once you are settled and go from there.

Yes I'd say 4x4 is necessary. If it snows where you're moving, which it probably will, get the 4x4. I lived in California and now Nevada and I couldn't/wouldn't be without 4x4. Save yourself the regret later and get it

Just remember, no private party will purchase a 2wd truck in a snow state. The dealer will take them in trade but beat you up on price because "we have to ship this 2wd out of state to sell it". It will cost you a substantial amount of money to roll those dice imo. I give this advice from someone who lives on the front range in CO. And don't even think about bringing your truck to the CO high country

Thats true. A 2wd truck here is hard to give away, wyoming. On the upside, alm9st guaranteed youll have the only one in 500 miles.
