Run the lower watt ones and you will be fine. I had them for 3 months no problems. No real risk at all

For future reference, I'll try to get some photos when we do Extinguisher training next time, so you guys can see it, we've cleaned up most of the Dry Chem powder down on the grounds. I'd also recommend staying away from PW cans (pressurized water extinguishers) I'm not sure about tacomas, but if you come across a car fire and go to use it, chances are there is magnesium in the car (typically older though I've seen it in newer SUVs) and well. Lets just say you will need a new pair of underwear.

Correct, Basiclly you want anything rated for an A, B or C class fire. Since that is what makes up most of a truck. D and K are combustible metals (magnesium) and cooking oils or fats... which... I don't think any of you keep in your vehicles.

or you can go the NASCAR route and get a Purple K one... (comical if it goes off accidentally in the cab of a truck..)

if you guys like Wiki you can read more about them here, or if you guys want to I can get the class we teach and make a thing up for you guys to read, if you want to learn more about them :)

lots of magnesium in the suspension components of newer cars and lighter duty SUVs. usually control arms and spindles. not sure of the Mg% in the alloy, but they are marketed as magnesium, so it must be pretty significant.
pretty sure the raptor runs Mg lower arms. that would be a pretty sight n fire!

If I remember my chemistry correctly Magnesium is difficult to ignite except in a powdered form... It would have to be really hot to fire up those LCA's...

you can ignite small strips pieces with a butane lighter, and slightly thicker pieces with a map gas torch. An LCA like that probably takes and oxy torch.

Are you thinking thermite by any chance? that's an iron oxide/aluminum powder mix, where you typically light a piece of magnesium with a lighter, which then burns hot enough to ignite the thermite.

they were suppose to do away with the mag, due to all the injuries from car fires... clearly that didn't happen

Those LCA's will cause a nice pop should the engine compartment be fully engulfed in flames. Hell even the passenger compartment will cause them to pop once the water is applied.

    As for the pop:

I've had a few "pop" on me, last one I was on actually, the pendot camera caught me and the girl who was on the tip of the line, you can see me pull her back in one photo and the next the white flare up....

A hummer magnesium runflat is enough to light the sky with a giant flood of light when put in the fire at Rausch. I wasn't even at camp and I could see the sky light up.

My friend lit a small strip of magnesium because he said it looked cool when we were younger. That was the brightest thing I think I've ever seen minus the sun or a welding torch.
    I can't imagine anything bigger.

No idea, I've not been as attentive as I use to be, just starting to get back into the fire side of things, spent the last 6 years on 3 different ambulances... New job brought me back into the fire service so I'd have to dig into it more to answer that question, I do know they use to use a lot of it in dash boards, I believe it was use in the fire wall.

Those dumbasses in the first video not wearing SCBA are just down right stupid. NEVER EVER EVER EVER fight a car fire without being fully geared up.
