All the "official" literature I've found just lists them as Bilstein shocks. Anybody know the model # off the top of their head?

I'd like to know too. Info is surprisingly difficult to find.

I know only that the OR has Bilstein and the Sport has Hitachi.

POS shock? I think my 2nd gen rides pretty nice on the highway.. Do the stock shocks wear out fast or something?

No issues for me with the OEM Bilsteins. I got over 200K out of the OEM Bilsteins on several new 2nd gen Tacomas.

Interesting. That's halfway what I expected them to be, some nondescript Bilstein branded shock that looks good on a Toyota marketing brochure. Either way, I like the factory ride but was just curious to know before I most likely do 5100s all the way around.

This may be a stupid question, but if you upgrade to 5100's from the stock OEM Bilstein's, do you have to do some kind of lift or alteration? Or can you just swap them straight out?

They fit; but, even at the 0" setting, you're going to have lift, since the '16 spring rate and length have been increased.

Seems like they're the same, just different looks and application

5100s are mainly popular because they offer adjustable lift heights up to 2.5" and are cheap.

Not many will ever say they're a great shock.

They look like Bilstein HD which are the same as I had on my F150 Lightning, but I'm sure they are valved specifically for the Tacoma, just like the Lightning's were valved specifically for it. They're okay shocks as far as factory offerings go, and good for 99% of people's needs with a stock truck :)

Info from a longtime Cruiser head, and longtime Tacoma mechanic:
"The 4600 isn't that much less of a shock than the 5100. 5100s are preferred if one has or will add a lift."

Gives me more faith. I almost "upgraded" to 5100s so I could say I had real bilsteins.

The stock OR shocks will work just fine lol

I wanted bilstein for my 02, but the 5100 would have been overkill for the application. Was directed to the 4600s. Proved well.
