Dealership never took my down payment, what would you do?

Discussion in '3rd Gen. Tacomas (2016-2023)' started by TonyWhats, Mar 9, 2016.

?

What would you do?

  1. Call immediately and give the the $5,000.

    50.6%
  2. Hope they never realize the mistake, but when they do play dumb and give them the $5,000.

    24.7%
  3. Hope they never realize the mistake, but when they do deny you owe anything.

    24.7%

To prove a point to the sales manager who basically said I was uneducated and couldn't understand simple math when he showed me the sales contract with the wrong price. Felt good for them to realize they fu*ked up.

I was never planning to keep it. Just curious what others would have done. It's never happened to me or anyone else I know before.

I would have put the money in my savings account. Chances are they would have caught it at some point. As soon as they call and say hey we never got the down payment you say oh sorry, I'll send it ASAP. You're still paying them plus that money has earned interest until they figure it out.

Your integrity is the only thing no one can take from you. You have to give it away.

    You did the right thing.

Sad to see so many voting option 2 & 3 in your poll. Thanks for making it 'open', I'll be able to expand my ignore list.

I agree honesty is the best policy but its hard for me to believe that you forgot about the 5000 down payment. I would definitely not forget that if my intentions was to put down 5000 dollars.

Not to cover for the man, but I walked out of a dealership years ago mad enough to do something physical to the finance manager that was rushing me not to read the contract and turning numbers around to the tune of a few grand. My thoughts were on what I wished I could do, not on money when I walked out. And this was a couple weeks after delivery.

    Good man

I had a similar circumstance when I purchased my T4R (almost 2 years ago now). As soon as I learned of the error I withdrew the cash and took it to the dealer. I was much less than $5k but, still wouldn't have felt right about not doing keeping my end of the deal.

I never said I forgot. I said they never asked me for it. We shook hands on a deal only for it to change at the last minute which turned into an hour long pissing contest. They made me feel like I was an idiot because I didn't understand the deal which changed as per usual dealership BS shiesty tricks. After all that they forgot to do the most obvious thing ask me for the money to pay for the Truck. I was going to be back at least 2 more times to drop off paperwork and pick up plates. I just wanted to see how long it would go before they realized I never paid. Up until the phone call I made at the 2 week mark they were clueless. I got great satisfaction asking the butt hurt sales manager if we were all good and if they needed anything else from me, waited for the all clear only to say hey didn't you forget $5000? Honest dealerships are definitely the exception, and this place was far from that. To be able to play a game with them was nice, and ultimately do the right thing and settle. That's what I did.

Personally, I would have walked out if they changed the deal. Why buy from a dealer who gives you grief?

Exactly right before I gave them the money, I would insist to give it to the owner of the dealership...
Then tell my story, and how it pissed me off that much... With the offenders in the same office..
And how you're sure others have been treated poorly..
Somehow get something for your troubles..

Whil I would not do it, I do agree with the distrust and in my case anger for dealerships in general that may lead one to choose 2 or 3

    You betcha.

Of course not. Opinions are just that. Opinions. Opinions can change based on discussion or experiences.

These (options 2 & 3) aren't opinions though. They are ethical lines in the sand.

These folks answered the poll stating they are willing to be dishonest and to lie about it when caught.

I filled out the Toyota survey last night and expressed my displeasure with the dealership. Sure enough I got an email this morning questioning my opinion. Will probably wait a week longer to get my plates but I don't care.

My example on how much a shitbag dealer can mess up a deal.....purchased a new 93 Xtra cab on return Desert Storm in Or. By 94, the back was too small for my daughters car seat so I traded it in San Diego for a used forerunner. Back then I made a purchase on payments, not price and took it home. They gave me a rate on used, that was going for new so the bank wouldn't make the deal and called me back in 2 weeks later to "fix" paperwork. They tried to extend payments to cover the interest rate. I refused and asked for my truck back. After Over a hour, they admit my truck had been sold and I threw a frickin fit. In a very crowded dealership. After threats of legal action, I walked out with a new, loaded forerunner for less than the used one but still very angry about 5 hours later.

I'd wait for them to call before I paid out, there is a strong possibility that I am an asshole though.

OP, you did the right thing. It also felt good when the paper dude realized they f@ck up.

3 years ago when closed on my house, the builder's daughter said they owed us $7.00 ( customed built so we bought lots of stuffs ourselves ) but in fact we owed them about $6000, overcharged from appliances we picked out. Her face was priceless when I told her that WE owe them that much NOT the other way around. ..

    Well done, OP.
