OP, Do what you want, but here is my opinion. I am trading in my Dodge for a Tacoma. Dodge has power seats, however a pain when cleaning the truck and getting them back in the same position. Manual seat adjustment is much Faster, simpler, easier. Gas mileage in the dodge is way less than the Tacoma. Granted , it is a V8, but if mpg is what you are going for, Tacoma is my choice. The dodge has had many issues from day one, and getting dodge to cover anything is a real pain in the a$$. So, do what you choose, but I will get a Toyota. So, I will sell you my truck I you want a Dodge.

I'd be a little gun shy getting a truck and motor made my Fiat. We had two Dodge's a 95 and an 04 with the Cummins motor, they were good trucks. Dodge has been very low on the totem pole lately on reliability according to Consumer Reports. My friend has a 2012 F150 Ecoboost, so far it's been a great truck. Gets good gas mileage and the towing capability is awesome. We have a 2015 F350 that my husband uses for our construction business. So far it's been a good truck but our friends Ecoboost out pulls our truck. It's an incredible motor.
Our other vehicles have been Toyotas. My husband had a 88 Toyota and an 04 Tacoma that he used for construction, drove the shit out of those trucks and never had any issues and got good money for them when we sold them. We have also had an 2000 Tundra, 08 Tacoma (which "I" think is a great looking truck) and now the 2016. I love the 2016, I am a little disappointed in the Tranny and hope Toyota will have a fix for that.

FYI traded my 2014 GMC SLT w/ 26,000 miles because of on going software problems that the dealership could not fix. After owning a T-100 & 2 Tundras, GMC didn't come close in anyway.
Make sure you do your math and you're compareing apples to apples. Seats? how often do you change your seat? I looked at the Ford too, didn't see the quality that Toyota has. Bottom line, your money, your call.

So get a Taco and leave the wife at home. Or maybe look into a Tundra. I'm 6'2 and have no issues with my Tacoma, but I don't have kids. My dog stays in the back of the truck with a camper shell on it.

When I decided to buy a truck I looked for Tacomas. I live on an auto row but no used Tacomas. I looked at a nice Ford Ranger. Then I looked at Tacoma World and saw comments like "The only good thing I can say about my Ranger is it cost less to buy." So I returned to my Tacoma fixation. I finally found one on the web at a dealer in the next county. When and checked it out, bought it after the usual fun of negotiating (I actually find playing games with people fun when necessary). I've had it for 3 years, the only repair has been the HVAC fan stopped working on all but high speed. I spent longer looking at info on the web than it took to fix it (unplug resistor, squirt some contact cleaner on it, plug it back in). I had to get it a new battery, it had a Toyota battery which I assume was the original battery which lasted 7 years, and 2 sets of windshield wipers. So 1 repair and normal maintianance in 3 years. A new F150 probably gets better mileage but would cost at least 2.5 times as much which buys a lot of gas and the Tacoma is big enough. Oh and F150s only come with AT which I don't like.

I came from an '11 Audi S4 to a TRD OR with Tech package and thought I'd have some issues at first not being pampered by my car and all.

    My complaints/ adjustments:

No power seats. I just don't understand why you can't opt for power leather seats.

No loaner cars at the dealer!

It does feel underpowered. It drives better than any truck i've ever driven, but its still just boring. Time for a supercharger!

The entertainment/ comm system is strange. I can't figure out why you can't respond to a text via voice with an iphone. Also, if the number is saved in your contacts you don't get the option to "call back" from the received text screen. This is silly.

Again with the comm center. I think its funny how you can't control a lot of the features from the steering wheel controls. Why can't you scroll through calls and contacts with the steering wheel controls! You can't get out of a received text with steering wheel controls either! I'm sure I'm forgetting some but its just annoying to have to reach over to the touch screen to get back to radio or nav after getting a text or making a call.

That being said, this thing is equally as nice as the Audi. I really love it! The only thing I'd trade it for is a TRD Pro!

I'm leaving a 135is after about 2.5 years due to reliability issues... as others have also said, reliability turns out to be more important that I thought. I've had this bmw at the shop 10+ times in the 15k miles I've driven it since I got it new, totaling more than $10k in warranty repairs (not really including labor, as that doesnt show on warranty repair invoices, just parts costs). The $7k transmission replacement was the last straw, I'm terrified to own this car without the warranty. Will I miss some of the luxury items? Probably, the seats in this car are amazing, and the power is intoxicating. But it's more of a toy car. I may own a BMW again, but only as a secondary vehicle. So I'm taking a beating on lost value of the bmw, waiting on my own OR 4x4 tacoma order, and hoping it will be here in a few weeks for some peace of mind.

Now, one thing I've not seen posted. Rear facing car seats in a tacoma are going to be a problem. You'll likely have to put it on the passenger side with the passenger side pulled forward more than is comfortable. That's a temporary issue, 2 years or so, but if that's going to be an issue I would seriously consider a full size truck. The tundra crewmax has ample space (I had a 2011 tundra when my kids were that size), I'm sure the other brands would as well.

It never hurts to know but the last truck I'd go for over a Toyota is the Ram Ecodiesel. They are a problem a minute type of truck. Right now among the guys I know it's basically 50/50 whether it makes it through the first year without spending a month in the shop.

My recently sold "2nd" car...bought it new and put 40k on it...it was eating as much with no payments as some I've owned making payments.

Maybe I am old, or just from another generation (I'm 39 years old, btw) but the things that you are nit-picking I really could care less about. Toyota trucks are almost like Subarus. The people who have them get it, and understand that for what you lose in 'creature comforts' you gain in capability, practicality and reliability and resale value down the line. The people that are more about appearances and caring what other people think are going to go with the other brands (Like Audi) which are mostly show, and no go, or spend more time at the dealership and end up costing more for the owner down the line. Why the heck do you think Audi has free maintenance on their cars?! They're always breaking down and cost a ton to fix. If you wanted the capability and performance of a truck along with all the little creature comforts you'd expect on a luxury passenger car it would just cost too much, or at least more than what most people are willing to pay. Most of the time you either pick one or the other, otherwise you're going to have to step up into the big leagues and fork out big money to have both. Or you can get a Dodge or a Ford which seem nice upfront but won't last for the long haul.

Heck, I remember when I was a kid we had a car that didn't even have seat belts and had an 8-track player! Personally I'd rather have longevity, reliability and resale value as my main attributes in a truck instead of a broken down truck that's always in the shop that came with all the creature comforts. But then again, I guess being able to have heated seats and scroll through calls and do everything from the steering wheel might actually come in handy when you're broken down on the side of the road and you need to call AAA. Might be handy to program their number into the truck's contact list so you can dial them from the steering wheel, and have a warm butt while waiting for that tow truck to arrive, since it seems like it would be a number you'd use fairly often! I guess I can understand your logic now!

    DO NOT BUY IT
I have been buying Toyota's since 1977. I have owned all but Avalon. Will not spend my money on any of the other manufacturers.
Maybe they will deal in price more if others don't buy them. That would be nice for me anyways:D

I think i successfully made a "build page". Take a look if you're interested. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/louies-build-2016-trd-off-road-double-cab.417631/
I am very disappointed with my truck. I had a 2013 with 35K miles. i would do anything to reverse my decision. But with my lift, tires, wheels, etc. i'm in 50K right now and it will be a long time before i can make another move. Bottom line:

2016 Tacoma can't maintain highway speeds above 4th gear. The trans/engine combo is inadequate and a complete failure. the torque comes to play at nearly redline and so does the horsepower. So the truck wants to rev like a sportbike. Gas mileage is a joke. If you want to get to 65 MPH in less than ten minutes you have to press the gas. This results in avg MPG of 16 for me. I got that with my 2013 and it had no problem practically idling at 80MPH in 5th gear.

As for creature comforts inside - very pleased. Off Road ability - fantastic. Crawl control is unstoppable.

I'm sure many will disagree, but what it comes down to is a $40K truck that can't maintain highway speeds.

And believe me, its a 5 speed auto, not 6. My 6th gear probably has 100 miles on it!!

My advice, Drive a 2016 tacoma for 150 mile test drive. Really get to know the truck.

True--a smaller truck is not practical to haul a family around on vacations etc..

So the truck wants to rev like a sportbike.

Haven't driven mine yet, lend it to my sister. She picked it up from the dealer fresh off the truck.
Hope it rev's as you say use to ride at Mid Ohio, Barber Motorsports Park , Road Atlanta etc...........

Guess I have a good one, or you're is just really screwed up because I clock quite a few highway miles on my '16 Tacoma and it gets to 65mph just fine for a truck, and like any car, if you want it to go faster, you have to give it more gas. Push the ECT button in and it's a noticeable difference. I can cruise at 70-75mph no problem at or just under 2,000rpm. My truck has never exhibited anything like "revving like a sport bike", and I towed 3,000lbs over mountain passes via I-80 from Denver to SF, and only going up steep grades and wanting would it rev high but that was when I was pushing in the gas pedal pretty far!

I think most people are just having unrealistic expectations of a rather 'large midsize truck' with a just adequate midsize engine in it. I have to ask, did you actually test drive the thing before buying it and put it through it's paces, or did you just buy it and then start complaining about if after the fact when there was no turning back?

But with full disclosure, I prefer Triumph inline triples over a Japanese 4 cylinder for the low end grunt and more usable power in the lower RPM's!

It's probably due to his lift and tires.
