Sears Platinum is the battery. Odyssey is another brand that is much more expensive. Supposedly the same innards as the Sears batteries.

I also had a red top that crapped out in my Scout after 2 years. It was discharged multiple times though. Need a deep cycle battery if you're going to be discharging it often. Non-deep cycle units, even AGM's, will not last if discharged often.

This is all from fuzzy memory, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

 

We use the yellow tops at work for powering our GPS base units. The base units cost upwards of 75K each. We lost 2 motherboards in the units last year due the batteries dropping voltage without warning. Now the shop is in a mad scramble to find a more reliable battery.

It's crazy that those units don't have a better voltage regulator for $75K. You could buy a 3rd Gen and a jet ski for that much!

Have you checked out West Marine in Concord? They have a bunch of deep cycle batteries. Maybe they have one that provides smoother discharge... instead of just dropping off.

 

I know our GPS department went with the yellow top because Trimble approved them. They don't listen to the guys out in the field that use the shit everyday they sit in the office and think they know everything. Lol!
