I call door gunner! I bet we could fit about 15 rounds of 50cal after fuel, pilots and the gun.

:rofl:I knew that comment would get a rise out of you.

I'll be happy to fly and you can be the gunner. I think I already have about 400 hours in Cessna 152's so I'm good to go. Do you know how to shoot?:boink::stirthepot:

In the AC-130, the pilot is the gunner.

Plus, it holds ALL the bullets. .50 cal. 20mm. 105mm.

Good point. Same thing with single pilot fighter jets.

And in this case, a Cessna 152.

We had a sniper problem in Bosnia, even after all the sniper battles were supposedly over. They'd set up shop in the top of a factory that had damn few windows and even fewer doors. They were taking pot shots (with a Russian .51) at the UN aid trucks. This was just outside Sarajevo, in the French sector. So, DGSE tried to root them out. Nope - approaches were booby trapped and all were a death zone; multiple ambush locations and mines. So, the SAS tried...and they gave up too, figuring it wasn't worth the loss of life. Army Delta (they were hunting war criminals for trial in The Hague) outright refused.

It was the German Luftwaffe 3 star running the air war that decided to attach some Bundeswehr Fuchs APCs with UHF and HF antennas...who would call up to an AC-130 hiding in the clouds. When the convoy came under fire, the Germans radioed the gunship, who popped a 105 dead on top of the snipers. Destroyed 1/3 of the top floor in one shot. Our convoys never came under fire again.

It still took the DGSE and SAS a week to clear through all the booby traps (mines and IEDs) to get to the building. When they finally got to whatever was left, three Russian nationals (ex army criminals, according to Russia) and two Serbs were dead. More importantly, the snipers throughout the county stopped shooting at us. Hooray for radios - comm saves the day again.

What, you thought this was an AC-130 story?

That was a fun read, and yes I thought it would culminate into a AC-130 story.

We could see all the birds we'd guide in and out of the country except the gunships. They only came over from Italy on cloudy days and at night. The Serbs hated them, and that tactic kept them scared. I'd say it worked.

    AC130H 20mm cannons (removed), 40mm gun, and 105mm cannon

    AC130U 25mm chain gun, 40mm gun, and 105mm cannon

    #1 AC130U 25mm, 40mm, 105mm
    #2 AC130W 30mm
#3 AC130J 30mm - I believe this is the one that the pilots overstressed during a test flight not long ago - that aircraft has been removed from service
    #4 AC130H 40mm, 105mm
