Transmission 2016-2023- 6 SPEED AUTOMATICS COULD BE LOW ON FLUID DIRECTLY FROM FACTORY

finally pulled the trigger and man'd up. I could no longer stand wondering if i was on borrowed time. I went to my local dealer and picked up 2 qts of the "genuine" sh#t atf ws for 17.88. On the way home stoped by parts store picked up a cheap fluid pump...7.49.

First thing today i did the whole procedure as gearcruncher explained, along with the .pdf that was posted. Along with the jumper pin mod.

I did the process once without touching the thermostat and got to over flow to trickle. Took about 1 qt here. But couldnt stand not knowing if the cooler was dry..?? So i did the process once more. This time i pined the stat. Well let me tell you the yota was still thirsty so i pumped more into it to get the steady trickle. Then capped it off. Turned it off removed the wire.
Not much fluid was wasted during this procedure btw. This is what it took total to get the over fill to drain to trickle.

 

Under 30 bucks. When i test drove it i immediately could feel the difference. Even the mystery 2200rpm humveerrroom hormanics vibration thing was noticeably less, almost gone. Noticed less "knobbie tread" vibes when slowing to a stop. Over all im amazed at this. The truck is actually a blast to "play" with now.

I got 2400 miles on it now. Hopefully i saved it quick enough.

Oh yeah.....the dealer!! I make things happen myself.

Mine took 1-1/8 quart(36 ounces) unpinned.
I plan on checking pinned tomorrow.
If my experience mirrors yours, I should need another 20 ounces. or 0.6 quarts.
0.6 quarts is the specified capacity of the tow package.
I happen to have about 2,800 miles.

 

Just got my truck back from the dealer and they said they couldn't duplicate my transmission problem and said the transmission fluid level was good. I will see if I have the same problem tomorrow morning when the truck is cold. If so I will take it to another dealer, I would do it myself but I want this documented.

 

Did my check yesterday with the thermostat pinned. Added about 18 ounces (0.6 quarts).

I made up a pump/filler to make the process easier. I found a pump that fits on a gallon jug at my local hardware store. Also got a length of clear tubing (3/8" ID X 1/2" OD) and a rubber stopper. I added a short piece of copper tubing from my scrap bin (1/4" ID X 3/8" OD).

I removed the fill plug and inserted my filler before I started so when the temperature was right I just had to remove the check plug and start pumping. I had plenty of time.

I used a 1/16" drill bit to pin the thermostat.

 

Fill plug is up high on the passenger side of the transmission roughly in line with the back of the pan and near the green wire. It has WS stamped on it.

 

This is the thermostat. It's also on the passenger side near the front of the pan.

Are they going to give you a new tranny? At minimum you deserve a lifetime warranty for the double fuck up from factory to the lot.

 

Yep! A very liberal coat of Amsoil HD Metal Protector followed a day later with a coat of Fluid Film.

 

No they didnt say anything about that. my truck only had 500miles on it when I got it checked. I dont think anything major could have happened as 90% time I drove it was very easy on it anyway

 

I'd press the issue. Being 2 quarts low could have done irreparable damage.

 

well its documented at 500miles it was 2qts low and serviced. so if I have any tranny issues I will come back on that

 

My trans has been slipping since purchased. I took it to the dealer at Fannin Toyota in Ashland Ky and after a 6.5hr wait they would only comment, "it's difficult to tell if it was low because when we push fluid into one side of the transmission what comes out the other end is not measured." While waiting and beyond frustrated I walked back to the service dept and they had the OBDII accessed. I'm not sure if they flashed an update or not as there are no notes of it on my service slip.
Anyways, I am still experiencing slipping when cold. I decided to measure a trans fluid and refill on my own based on the instructions in this thread... 2.8 quarts is all that was drained! I have a DC SR 4x4 V6 with a "5(Mexico)" Vin code. I'm beyond p!ssed off! How can I get Toyota to do the right thing? FYI, my u-joints were bone dry when I received it.

It did not take any more fluid. Weird...

Couple things I noticed though;
-idle sounded way different when priming it with the P-S-P procedure
-torque converter lock-up is way different; much improved
-D is actually tolerable; not in such a hurry to get 6th. Doesn't lug anymore.
-smoother shifts

It just behaves more like you would expect it to.

Is cooler fluid flow related to torque converter lockup?
Maybe I purged and primed everything by pinning the stat?

 

I pinned mine this time and checked again yesterday, no more fluid needed here either. Noticed it did seem to take longer getting the solid D this time vs not pinned, maybe it was colder though. Drives just as good now after fluid was added the first time, no complaints here...

 

Took mine in today to the dealership today (got rear-ended on the way - horrible way to start the day). It had the R-D hesitation and occasional hesitation/hard shifting with 650 miles on the clock. It took 3/4 quart to get up to spec. The hesitation is pretty much gone and on the highway it behaves significantly better. Talked to the techs and they said they've seen 1 other Taco come through their doors with this issue.

One of our members who had low fluid just got a call from corporate . They extended his transmission warranty to 7 years / 100k .
