I test drove the '16 just for the hell of it. I think the engine hate is misguided a little bit... it's the transmission and the shifting points that drove me crazy. Now, I've heard the transmission has a pretty good learning curve, so maybe it sorts itself out, but I think if you put the 3.5L in the 2nd generation, you wouldn't hate it.

    Maybe.

If I was looking to buy a truck when the 3rd gens were hitting the lot I'd probably have tried to scoop up a 2nd gen before they were all gone. There are some things I like about the third gen, but for now I like the 2nd gen more.

Just traded my 2012 Tacoma for the 2016 TRD Off Road. Wouldn't consider it an "upgrade" but the 2016 had a lot more on it than my 2012. Also dealer gave me crazy money on my trade in and couldn't pass up the deal.

Kerrdog, why is everyone going to have to switch to a 3rd gen or different manufacturer?

    Is there something I'm missing?

Well its simple they dont make 2nd gens anymore. When it dies for good, what else are you going to do. You cant go out and buy a new second gen can you.

Maybe upgrading is not the proper word to use. I use the term upgrading as buying a newer model and also more features.

    nothing cool
OP, just kidding around with the whole "upgrade" thing. But I'm just really disappointed with Toyota for even releasing the 3rd gen with so many problems and crap things wrong. I'm a Toyota fanboy. I'll admit it. My entire family and my wife's family all have Toyotas. And I really wanted to get a 3rd gen until I saw it and test drove one. Of course it's nice (because it's new). Mine is dirty and has baby wipes, kids toys, 2 car seats, bags, extra jackets and clothes, and it's not all nice and shiny like a new one. But that's where it ends for me at least.
As much as I want or wanted a 3rd gen. I honesty don't consider it an "upgrade" from my 2011.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
Cause if you don't agree with me it means I'm not cool so you HAVE to agree with me.

Post 30 answers your question. I glad you think that I think everyone has to agree with me how lame a statement that was. I have owned 2nd gen tacomas myself. My last was a 2011 which my son drives now. Never had an issue with it and I have to admit I miss things about it. I happen to like some of the new tech on the 2016 also. I am not saying its a better truck but not saying it is any worse either. As far as never buy a first year model that argument could hold some water or not. I know that there is some issues with the 2016 right now some have them some don't. The truck does take some getting used to but the more I drive it the better it seems to me. I have heard of rust issues on the 2nd gen and a lot complain of vibrations in the 2nd gen, not saying those will not also be issues with the 3rd gen. MY point being if the first year of a truck bothers you then when do you know when to buy one when this issue has been an ongoing issue. I didn't write this to make anyone's panties get in a wad but if they do then they do. I am a big boy I can take it. We all love tacomas so why jump on each others back about an opinon.
