As much we'd hope that would be a possible fix, I doubt replacing the rear motor mounts with the exact same motor mount that came brand new on the vehicle would change anything. I feel like after some driving and chance to settle, the vibration would reappear.

I don't think it would hurt though to "go thru the motions" and have them replaced (also, somehow getting in writing that if this doesn't fix it, you should be reimbursed).

Also, I'm on your side here and think that's a ridiculous amount of money to pay for a truck that's still under warranty. I can't believe they wanna charge you.

On another note: This engine came from the Lexus - which uses both electronic and oil filled dampeners. Toyota took this engine and for some reason chose rubber engine mounts. Unclear to me if they thought this would last longer? A more permanent DIY fix might be to order those Lexus rear mounts and install them in the Tacoma --if they are compatible.

Update: Got 4th opinion from Master Tech - not affiliated with Toyota. He told me the fix could be a "cross engineered from the Lexus." Asked him why the Tacoma uses rubber mounts vs oil filled. I said, is this because it's a truck - does the rubber make it stronger? He told me it comes down to profits, nothing more. He concluded by saying Toyota has the resources to make this fix and we should not have pay for it.

Good point - who knows if this ends up becoming the TSB fix for this. I wonder if your tech and dealer would "allow" or "test" this fix out for you.

Wow at your cost no effing way it's a manufacture issue that should be covered 100% by warrenty!

I want I add that toyotas marriage with subaru (I am a current subaru wrx owner) has resulted in toyota to start being the same manufacture defect denying company that Subaru has been. For example on my 09 wrx there was a clutch pedal/firewall weld crack issue that they denied for several years, and people fought tried getting a class action going. And 4 years later they finally admitted the issue was present and extended the warranty and put a TSB. But before hand people paid upwards of 1400 out of pocket to have it repaired, I almost paid 900 for mine but SOA "good willed it" and repaired...not related but really I think the subaru toyota marriage was a bad deal.

They probably would allow me to test this [at my cost].

Yeah I agree, the bean counters rule Toyota now. Granted they took a huge hit with that tsunami, and then another big hit with the gas pedal recall and other government fines, so that's probably why.

Just as a comparison, I drove a 2016 GMC Canyon today. No vibrations felt. Drives like it should, no vibrations in the gas pedal or wheel--shifts like it should-smooth no clunking at stop signs. I focused in onto the engine mounts--they use "hydraulic engine mounts -these mounts reduce engine vibrations for a smoother, quieter ride..[see brochure page 21]."

I officially switched to a 4R today. At the end of the day I suppose it's a rather ineffective "vote with your wallet" move but I was too nervous about getting stuck with the buzz. Admittedly getting my family of four in both a Taco and a 4R today played no small part in the decision.

I wish this was an option for me, but I really need the bed. Glad to hear things worked out for you, and good luck with the 4R.

Thanks! It wasn't easy but the family definitely closed the decision. The reduced cargo space is going to require creativity though.

MGM Trail Premium! I should pick it up Monday or Tuesday.

I've got a second child on the way, so I could use the extra space as well. The Tacoma is pretty cramped, my son likes our Rav4 much better. Hope you enjoy the 4Runner, they seem like great vehicles!

BTW, you voted with your wallet into something more expensive... :)

We'll be a Rav4 and 4R family actually. I have my wife's hand-me-down 2008 V6 RAV, which is a lot of fun to drive, and we're trading in her temporary Impreza econobox so that I get the 4R and she gets the Rav back. This whole new vehicle search started because I've REALLY pushed the Rav to its limits and need a more capable platform.

For the sake of everyone in Tacos already I hope the buzzing issue is resolved soon.

So.....they want you to replace the mount with the identical mount on
a brand new truck? Did the say something was physically wrong with them? I
haven't looked at one but did he say why? And WTF!!! @ YOUR COST??? I
would have gone ape-shit in the service area if I was told something like that.

I would be more than willing to buy the 'Lexus' mounts, if they would fit, and have them installed, if Toyota paid for the labor. Not something I would prefer to do; however, the hit I will take trading this truck in might be worth the try....but it chaps me that I would have to do something like this on a new $40k truck and would lower my opinion of Toyota even more.....

Hopefully, a TSB will come out and Toyota will maybe just do this, anyway, as the fix...however, I wonder and doubt that the Lexus mounts will even work in the Taco?

I felt the same about how the Canyon drove. My friend, the Fleet Manager, was trying to tell me that the Canyon has a tranny issue where it hunts all the time. Never noticed it on several test drives. The GMC side service manager there used to be the asst service manager on the Toyota side. Said he sees a lot of Canyons with various issues, much more so than he ever saw Tacos. The problem with this analysis is that the Taco he was speaking of was the Second Gen...

You can certainly see this in the small things that are not, at least, on the Tacoma 'Limited'. Lots of little things are missing from the truck that one would expect, like a power driver's seat, glovebox light, and integrated tailgate power lock. Not essentials, for sure; however, over thousands of trucks, these items not being included saves them lots of money.

I agree, they are not essentials, however they charge a premium for the Limited, and in essence you are paying for them, but their not included. But it also effects how the dealers will handle repairs and warranty claims. For example, I was having the R to D slip in the mornings. The dealer absolutely refused to check the fluid level in the transmission without observing the slip for themselves. The service manager and tech both said they have strict instructions from Toyota to not do anything to the vehicle if they cannot observe the problem.

Which is understandable, however, it appears Toyota has cracked down on warranty work the dealers try to bill to them. So in a nut shell, they will not do any preventative maintenance unless you pay for it.

But this leads to another problem, if the dealers refuse to do such work, then they will never discover these faults for themselves, and as a result, Toyota will continue to send these trucks off the line with issues.
