Replacement RED Taillights

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I have a 2015 TRD SPORT, stock with 4Runner limited rims and katzkin leather.

Call me crazy, but I hate the stock taillights. The clear/chrome look is tacky IMO. I am looking to replace the lights with a more traditional, all red lense.

Any experience with the lights below? I want a quality, OEM look.

 

I think the oem (2005-2008) non-LED look better then those spyder lights and oem quality is likely much better.

I like the look of the older lights, but I'd really like to stay led.

I'm not sure painting the inner housing is the look in going for.

Are there known quality issues with Spyder?

 

Ive been strongly considering red tail lights also. Id like to see these on our trucks.

I painted my tailights red on my last vehicle. Looked so much cleaner!

 

Stock housings with led bulbs? I know nothing about spyder other than having read on here that some have had leaks. Buy whatever look you like and run a bead of silicone sealant along the seams. I am not a fan of any light that compromises output for fashion. I put oem led on my truck to get the advantage of faster, brighter lights and I like the look too so it's a win win for me. The one thing that bothers me is that if the led part stops working it doesn't look to be easily fixed.

 

I have those Spyder tail lights. I have had them for about a year with no problems. Simple plug and play. I like them. No more chrome.

 

$150 off Amazon. you'll need to pop a load resistor onto the brake light circuit of each tail so you don't anger the ABS and STM lights.

 

20W Samsung projector reverse bulbs and LED turns too. they didn't hyperflash either...

In for pics and more feedback on Spyder tailights. The Altezza style stock oem tails remind me of the early 00's import days. Altezza everything!!!

 

I thought I was the only one that didn't like the "chrome" tail light look. I've been wanting to change mine (2015) out for red too. Also looking for info on a set of plug and play replacements.

 

Not the best pictures, but here you go. Plug and play, just need to use your existing backup bulb.

 

Nice. Did you need to install any resistors or anything? Signals flash at a normal rate? Did you run a bead of silicone for extra protection against moisture?

 

No resistors needed; straight plug and play. I did use new LED back up bulbs but you can use the OEM bulb if you like. Flashes like normal.

 

What I plan on doing is having a red vinyl tint laid over the taillights. I did this on my wrx hatchback to get rid of the ugly chrome and I beleive this is the cheapest easier method for the Tacoma as well.

 

Just nip out 3mm of the plug socket on the new lamp (did mine with dykes by eye) so you can slip the resistor wires between the plug and socket so they can go off and be hot by themselves.

Crimp in a set of Sylvania load resistors you can grab them for $13 @ O'Reilly, crimp to stop and ground leads on the light plug adaptor on the unit itself (black and red IIRC. Test light ($7 @ Harbor Freight.) And it's harness that you crimp the resistors to

(leaving your factory wiring untampered. And being different. I also had no load on my stop circuit at all because I replaced my three third bake lights with red LEDs (2 days after I bought it, totally forgot)

Betcha mine would PNP on your truck (when you have your ABS light come on you check your incandescent bulbs.)

I'll pull a tail tomorrow morning and snap pics. It's super easy and you can have all LED brakes since people text and drive or bate it and drive... LED's light up 0.2 seconds faster than an incandescent bulb, but at 75 mph this translates to 21' extra braking distance for the cars behind.

I have the smoked version. I like them a lot. Look just OEM enough. Not tacky. LEDs are bright. I got them from eBay.
