Arizona heat kills. Its bad for a lot of cars. Take an engine like the 3.0, who's weakness is heat and throw it in a place like that, yeah its gonna have problems unfortunately. That's how mine kicked the bucket. Ran strong as hell till the last few moments though.

Torque wise not sure what's going on there. 22RE is around 140 and the 3.0 is around 180. Maybe it's an issue of how he controls the clutch and gears? Just taking a random guess.

    This guy

Yup, the engine in my 5 lug Taco is the 2RZ, pretty much a newer version of the 22RE. It is 142 HP stock- over the years, they have been able to push more HP out of the same platform.

Yup, but the 3.0 is also only a SOHC, therefore not quite as beefy as a DOHC like the 3.4L. I still find it funny that my 5 lug 4 cylinder Tacoma has almost as much HP as my v6 4runners, though. Only 8 HP difference.

That is very true. 3.0 is the only SOHC V6 Toyota ever made. Why they went this route I'm not sure. Trying to go in a new direction perhaps then realizing it was a mistake?

Yeah. When it came time for them to make their offroading V6, they rushed it onto the market and didn't spend enough time in development and testing. Part of the reason the 22R-TE exists was to buy Toyota more time to get the 3.0 ready. They also had to tweak things towards the end. One example is the head gaskets. Toyota originally planned on using asbestos gaskets but then the government got in the way because asbestos. So Toyota just threw a new gasket in and shipped it. Didn't do a lot of testing to see what happened and the head gasket issue was conceived. Throw in the shitty headers and crossover they used in the 2nd gen and the head gasket problem blows up

Yup! They just came up with a quick replacement for the asbestos gasket, didn't think it out all the way through. And it doesn't help that with the design of the manifold, it dumps right into #6 exhaust port. Burnt valves for days.

Sweat. Seems like my research is paying off then

From what I read, multilayer steel gaskets and a resurfaced head/block is like the ultimate fix. From what I've read it become and I quote "bombproof"

With all the other bs I'm gonna do to mine like heat wrap exhaust and put a weep hole thermostat It could really be "bombproof," especially if I redo to exhaust like I want to. Fingers crossed!

It isn't about power getting up the grade it the issue whether his 3.0 will survive the grade. He pretty much keeps in town because it has been giving him issues on long mountain grades.

Yup, that would go a long way to help "bulletproof it," as you say. New headers would also help, but that's rather expensive. The only good options there are LCE and Doug Thorley.

Right. I was only talking about power in relation to the torquiness of the 22RE. And yeah I'm not surprised he's worried about survival. Arizona heat kills. Put a engine like the 3.0 in that kind of heat and you're asking for it to die

What I've heard is that if you modify to stock ones you can eliminate the issue. Just gotta cut and move the crossover.

Though I'm sure a dual straight pipe couldn't hurt haha

Lol right? Someone on T4R was telling me about this awhile ago. What I'm thinking is redoing it, but welding on some flanges so that way I can have something cool/crazy for normal use, and something for when it comes time to smog, because California smog sucks dick

Awh, that's right, you've got smog testing. :( Fortunately, I don't have to worry about that, but I was hoping to help you find a solution too.
Only thing I don't like about it is the placement. Kinda in a bad place if you plan to be out on any trails.

Well Ramon can get out. The second gens have taken over!
Fuck you. You get out too!
I couldn't even see what he did. The pics were all blurry on my phone. Just gotta route them a different way. It's the idea that's important
