2016 TRD Sport vs OffRoad

How is it that I see 2016 TRD off-roads with painted bumpers? I also see OR's with chrome bumpers. Are they special order or something? I asked a guy if he swapped out his chrome bumper for a painted bumper and he said it came that way from the dealer.

 

it's my understanding that if you don't get any tech package, you will get chrome rear bumper.

 

I hate how they package cars nowadays. There should just be a checklist. I should be able to get a trd off-road double cab long bed manual transmission with steelies( going to be swapped anyway) and a damn painted bumper with no overpriced stereo equipment. But that's agianst Toyota logic I see.

 

that would make for a really slow production line! but I agree, would be cool to do a checklist of just what I want. With that said, I'm going for TRD Offroad Double Cab Long Bed, most likely Quicksand color when the time comes for me to buy. I used to be sold on the Sport... but no longer!

 

That's right. You need to think like the masses to get your truck in a reasonable time. Once you get it, then mod the shit out of it. Till then, be a lemming.

Joining the conversation a bit late. I looked at both, and while I like both I think I will go with the OR. I plan to take to use it off road, so I think that makes the most sense. Although I debated getting the sport for the creature comforts... Either way I think they built and awesome truck, just don't blow your cash on the Pro model

My opinion : If you plan to drive mostly in the city but want the option to have 4x4 if need, go sport. If you plan to off road, get the OR. If you plan to spend to much on Fox shocks and a 1" lift go Pro.

They are both about the same cost, so you decide if the looks of a Sport outweigh the off-road driving ability of the Off Road to easily take the truck anywhere without spending more money.

 

I would go with the off-road but I want an access cab and it doesn't come in Manual. WTF is that? Seems like off-roaders would want to drive a manual right - isn't that the whole fun of recreational driving? I actually like the black fenders - makes it look more rugged.

I'm not a big off-roader personally but I do like the idea - I plan to buy some land up north sometime soon and it can be very snowy around here. I just don't like the idea of a manual transmission. These trucks are a bit sluggish anyway and I hate getting stuck between gears and delayed shifts when I'm trying to make a move. I test drove an auto and it seemed to take forever to shift.

Will the sport have that much less performance in snow or mild off-roading?

 

Depends on who you are. I prefer using an auto Offroad. You don't have to worry about burning out the clutch or stalling out and rolling and I can two foot. A lot of those with manuals eventually get hand throttles or crawl boxes to make it a bit easier.

Heck, the majority of the rigs that run KOH run autos.

As far as in the snow and mild off-roading both will be similar, but the Offroad has the locker which is a night and day difference Offroad. Plus you get a lot more with the Offroad. The Sport is essentially a cosmetic package. With the 16 Offroad you get the locker, bigger diff, multi-terrain select, crawl control, and a digital tiltometer

 

Ok thanks for explaining. I've never done any serious off-roading so wouldn't know about that stuff. I do like the idea of locking diff - i had assumed any 4x4 tacoma would have that until reading the forums. Does my '04 4x4 manual not have locking differential? Sure feels like it when put into 4low.

Well shit - I had settled on the sport but now I'm thinking about the off-road again. Does anyone else find the tacoma too slow to drive auto? I often drive in Boston so maybe it's just me, but I hate any delay in response when i'm trying to get up and go. With manual I can always rev it up and get the acceleration i need. Plus I always dream of getting back out west for the winter, and I much prefer to climb/descend in manual.

 

It shift instantly when I put my foot down. I have never had a problem with that. Most of us don't like the way the downshifts so fast when going up a hill.

The Sport costs exactly as much as the OR in all packages and options. You only get appearance items instead of mechanical items. The sport cost less than the OR in 2nd gen and that's why it was so popular. Now that they cost the same, there is more demand for the OR

 

well i'm pretty sure the sport costs less b/c you can get it in manual. i think $1000 difference msrp. i've heard the truck takes some time to 'learn' your driving style before it settles down with the shifting. maybe that's why the auto felt so weak when i test drove. just seemed to shift real slow.

there was a thread but i forget which one with a lot of people complaining about the auto trans and how it was always searching for gears.

 

The Sport and the OR have the same MSRP for every trim and package. You can get the OR in a manual in select packages.

That's only because there is no AC 4x4 Manual in OR. The Sport gets that alone. Also, you didn't copy the DCSB 4x2 Sport. All the trucks that match up in cab, bed, engine, and transmission are the same price between Sport and OR

 

I know - but that's all I was saying. I'm looking at AC 4x4 TRD's. I can get the TRD Sport for ~$1500 less b/c they offer MT.

 

Very few customers want to buy an AC Sport with a manual... haha. That really doesn't count

 

yeah looking over it they only make 3 MT V6's. Why does everyone hate manuals?

 

1) We have traffic jams or border weights with stop go--- stop go...
2) We have steep hills and burning clutches are no fun.
3) We grew up (or just got old)!
