Hey guys! Last week I purchased a 1999 Tacoma Extended Cab 5 speed 4x4 with 144k miles. I've always liked the Tacoma, but could never find the exact one I wanted (for the right price). PO was diligent with the maintenance, but it could use a few odds and ends.
    • Sunroof is broken
    • PS window switch works intermittently
    • DS electric door lock doesn't work
    • ABS light is on
    • Leaking PS CV
    • DS paint is shot (PO must have parked the DS facing the sun)
    • Headlights could use a buff

Here it is right after I picked it up...

And over the weekend after a quick detail...

The truck has the "TRD Off Road" logo on the fender and an "SR5" badge, but it doesn't have an electronic locking diff (at least, I can't find the button). Was that just an option on the '99? Or did someone put an Off-Road logo on it? The truck currently has BFG All Terrain 31" tires on stock 10.5" wheels.

My immediate plans are to repair the items above, as well as change all the fluids and filter to Amsoil synthetic.

Long term, I'd like to put a set of Relentless bumpers on it, and add a 3" lift with BFG 33" ATs ;-)

If it's a trd it should have the diff lock seen in this pic. If it does not PO probably just put those stickers on. Welcome to tw and congrats on your new truck!2016-03-14-09-48-07-1873876729.jpg

you can also look at the diff and see if there is a box looking thing hanging off the front driver side next to the pumpkin

I have a TRD / SR5 combo with a rear diff lock... but mine's 2000, so it might be different depending on the year. Identifying the e-locker should be easy.

Thanks for the help! It doesn't have an e-locker. PO must have just added the stickers.

yea you would also have fender flares instead of the chrome trim

Yessir. I'm thinking about adding OEM TRD Off-Road flares anyway. I'm not a huge fan of chrome. Should I just get Bushwacker? Or does Toyota sell the flares directly?

Go with Bushwacker. The OEM flares would require a home equity loan.

If you have plans for mods in the future, in my opinion, you are better off w/o the TRD. The rear diff is an 8.4 vs. 8 in the TRD. Plus, you end up replacing the remaining TRD parts anyway. Adding a locker for the rear is a piece of cake.

    Nice truck.

    Good luck.

Haha, thanks! Do you know if the Bushwacker flares require paint? Or can I install them out of the box?

I was going to ask I4 or V6 but the 5spd TRD would have come with it regardless

It's a V6, but it's not an Off Road edition.

I really like your wheels. Where did you pick them up? Through Toyota?

Found them on CL. Guy had a Baja Tacoma that he was making a racer out of.

    Good find!
Try keeping it stock. They work best that way.
I just put on some new tires.
    Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza Plus 265/70 R15
A hair smaller than the 31 x 10.5 This truck sees little dirt. The roads around here are all paved.
Also, I have a neyber with the black one. His paint peeled fast. Mine is still perfect, however, I wax mine 3 times a year.

The flares I've seen do not require paint. Check out JLee's build in the SAS section. He has them on his Lunar Mist Taco. They are black and look to need a bit of spray protectant now and then. For that, I use Turtle Wax Super Protectant.

    Hope this helps you.

There is no way that is going to happen.

Cool, thanks. I looked back at the Bushwacker website, and they're UV protected. Some aftermarket body parts require paint, or they'll age and chalk immediately. The Bushwackers look like they'll age at about the same rate as the plastic bumper inserts and treads. Thanks, again.
