Is this possible? Has anyone swapped out an SR 5 overhead console and put in a TRD over head console with compass and temperature in a 08 double cab.

Good luck finding one that you don't have to trade your first born child for. But, yes they are interchangable, and you'd only need to get the temp/compass gauge part...but therin lies the problem.

I looked at doing this but the overhead compass/temp display unit retails new for about a $1000.00  even with my discount it is a little rich for my taste. I did not look real hard but I did not see the wire harness or a connector for the temp sensor in the center grill area so I don't know if it would be even possible without some wire harness work. I think I going the direction of a rear view mirror unit with a compass/temp built in it.

I have done it. The connectors are all there you just need to buy the ambient temp sensor. IIRC it cost me $20 for the sensor and $58 for the overhead console. I got lucky on the console but wrecking yard is good place to start.

Synapse, sorry I do not have any pic to post. The connectors are easy to find. For the console it is right there when you remove the existing overhead console it is hard to miss. For the thermistor/sensor it is tape on the support bar near where the horn is at the front between the grill and the radiator.

You need to unscrew one screw inside the sunglasses holder. There are two other retaining clips that will pop out when you pull the console down. The clips may come off and fall inside the head liner just an fyi.

I'll reiterate, pull straight down on the front of the overhead console. Do not pull towards the back at any point. I sheared the plastic tabs right off of mine. I'll use self tapping screws to reinstall mine.
