Rowher Flats

getting off work early.... anyone local down to hit this place up today?

 

Seeing all the rain today, I decided to head over to Rowher Flats to have some fun in the mud. It was apparent when driving on the entrance road that I was the only one there. My tracks were the only tire tracks in the mud.










Being alone and knowing that no one else was there today, I was afraid to tackle the "Look Out" and "Rowher Trails" (Both black diamond). There were plenty of other trails that were a whole lot of fun in the mud.


On one trail I found myself in a tough situation. I went over the crest of a little hill and the drop off on the other side was way steaper that I had expected. My right front tire slid into a rut. The left rear was way off the ground.














I may have been able to keep going down and then up the other side, but I locked the rear diff and backed out. The right rear was pressed down so hard in the mud I did not even need 4wd once the rear diff was locked.

 

That looks like fun I wanna head out there this weekend. If anyone wants to go let me know?

 

Derek i know exactly what bypass your talking about on sierra pelona. i was checkin them out and thinking which ones would be doable with the prerunner. they got lots of them up there, almost took the wrong turn and almost caught myself in a bad situation.

 

That place looks fun.

 

I live 20 minutes away so if anybody wants to roll out on the weekend I'm in. I get random days off during the week so if anybody wants to roll out during the week you can pm me. I've only ridden this place on my dirtbike so I don't know what trails are good/too tough for our trucks

 

Cj, where is this located? you mean we got some trails near us? I no longer need to travel 60+ miles to off-roading? I'm in.

santa clarita area, theres shit load of trails up in the angeles forest. but also lots of pinstriping, and i know you like to keep ur paint fresh

 

Its off the 14 fwy, exit Sand canyon. Its been closed for the last 2 years and just recently opened up again. I've only been there with my dirtbike so all the trails I know are tight and narrow. I'm planning on going this Sunday (13th) if the weather permits and someone rolls with me to check out the trails and map something out.

 

I was thinking of going back on Friday or Sunday. It should rain Friday - Sat. so plenty of mud everywhere...

I have not tried the Look Out trail or the Rowher trails yet because I have been alone. But, the Sierra Pellona trail is easy (2wd friendly) and fun and it takes about 1 or 2 hours.

 

theres alot bypasses on there too, you gone through any of them?

 

I have done many of the bypasses. Some are tough, but I don't remember each one.

The trail that goes from Sierra Pellona down to Bouquet Cyn is only for 4x4 (that one I remember).

 

Did you go through the bypasses with 4x4 or nah? i just wanna know so i dont attack one and get in trouble

 

I used 4wd on about 1/2 of them. Most have loose rocks/sand.

When are you going next?

 

might go this saturday morning. i like to go early before the bikes show. i almost took one off the cliff when i was leaving last time

There's a fun hill climb from Bouquet Cyn. just above the resivior, you'll see it on your right from the road.

You can also get up via San Fransiquito at two different places - one much closer to Santa Clarita. It's about 10 miles or so up the canyon, there's a large dirt parking lot on the left side of the road and there's a fireroad on the right that goes up the hill.

Pretty much all forest roads on the south side of San Fransiquito or Bouquet will lead to Rowher flats. Those on the north (which leave on your left if you're heading towards palmdale don't - some of them lead over to Lake Hughes Rd. (Castaic)

 

I'm going up today if anyone wants to go - probably take San Fransiquito to Rowher in the back way, there are few fun trails there. Some decent hill climbs, especially since it will be slick out there. Stock 4x4 would be okay, but there is a section or two where increased ground clearance makes it easier to avoid body scraping.

 

I am down for the Sat. morning trip out there early with tacoskim, what time are you guys going to meet up and where. Sand Canyon exit off the 14fwy at the In and Out or at the Am/Pm. How does 8:30am or 9am sound.
