Transmission problem?

    When I back out of a parking spot and stop and shift into drive I have an issue sometimes the truck just acts like it's in neutral but if I shift into N and back into Drive it goes no problem. Anyone know? If there are any forums like this just please point me in the right direction.

    OP, if you have the tow package, it sounds like low tranny fluid. Since Toyota in their infinite wisdom decided to eliminate the trans dip stick there's threads here on how to check it.

    Yes it was serviced just 5,000 miles ago with new filter and everything and fluid is full not low. That was my first thought was low fluid.

    Sounds like your shift cable is mis-aligned ?
    What transmission do you have ?
    4 speed automatic or 5 ?

    Its a computer controlled transmission . A computer scan would probably give you the best diagnostic .
    From your explanation I would check shift cable alignment to start .
    Some reading material here
    Some 2005 – 2009 model year Tacoma vehicles may exhibit a MIL “ON” condition with DTC P0705(Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction (PRNDL Input)) stored. Common symptoms withthis DTC can include possible delayed engagement into Reverse or Drive and possible harsh gearengagement when shifting between Park or Neutral into all other gears. Follow the procedure in thisTSB to determine if this service bulletin is applicable and to repair the vehicle.

    Yes that is the symptom I have but no mil light so still scan or just check the alignment first? I will report back with anything that I find.

    I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
    I want to point out that OP has 2005 pre-runner and those had problems with rear seal leaking transmission fluid. I am pretty sure there is even TSB for it.

    some people are claiming and speculating that if you have tow package you have additional
    tranny cooler and toyota forgot to add enough ATF to fill the cooler on some trucks [when they
    check and think the ATF is low...and a cooler is installed]


    some are claiming this...


    all I can say is I have tow package and a750f and nope, I have no tranny issues.

    I also don't care to check my fluid level because why ?

    it drives fine
    everything my tranny does is accountable for what input I have given the vehicle controls

    I had a problem with the leak and it is fixed and hasn't come back all fluid levels are good in the trans. I also had the drive shaft rebalanced and they modified the end at the axle so it would not make that issue come back. They said it was a very common issue on my generation and newer because the driveshaft design from Toyota.

    That's where I stand as well. Have a '15 PreRunner - no shifting issues or any of the symptoms of low fluid.

    I doubt he needs a rebuild , but a proper diagnostic should be performed

    I now work at a dealer but the shop foreman is not really that helpful.. he says get rid of the truck. I checked the fluid level with the scan tool factory. It is full.
