    Small useful for me stuff.
The Myth Busters did this test years ago on a track with a given amount of fuel. Their testing showed with a tailgate better mileage. Reasoning was the air flow over the cab and in the bed of the truck. They put the truck in a wid tunnel during the episode too if I remember correctly and with smoke they could show what was happening.

Was pretty easy to do, luckily I still have a garage with open rafters at my old house but, my new garage is finished, have to figure that out before I sell the old place.

I went to check out a Tacoma there once and found oil underneath it so I popped the hood and found the same thing. I guess it's a common occurrence there.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
Correct. They showed, with the help of Ford, that a truck with the tailgate up has a wind-profile similar to that of an SUV where the air falls off the back behind the tailgate. This is caused by a spinning pocket of air in the bed of the truck. (Interesting to note: this also only applies if the air is coming directly at the front of the truck, introduce a crosswind and it all goes away)

I always assumed that since I had my spare tire strapped into the bed the spare was interfering with that pocket of spinning air. I had hypothesized that air was actually coming off the cab and falling into the bed only to be "caught" (like a sail) by the top half of the tailgate.

I am now (of course based on a small sample size) assuming even with no tailgate that the air was doing something similar to the Mythbuster's test. Once removed I'm guessing it is doing more of a "spoiler" type effect where the air comes off the cab and hits the bed pushing downward.

This type of "phenomena" would describe the feeling of "more weight" in the rear contributing to a smoother ride. I have nothing to prove this is what is happening. Just a best guess right now.
